Finally, Angel And Henry Will Take The Pitch

By: Dave Martinez | Comments 13 Comments

102919663CT025_THIERRY_HENRWill Juan Pablo Angel and Thierry Henry be the offensive dynamo everyone expects to see? Red Bull fans will get their first glimpse this afternoon as both are expected to start the game against Manchester City in the Barclays New York Challenge.

Currently, the second place Bulls have accumulated 18 goals through 16 games; hardly a score line to hang their hats on. The midfield has been less than inspirational, with only five assists all season long, three at the feet of Joel Lindpere. Still, Juan Pablo Angel has managed to find the back of the net, against all odds, producing half of the teams goals (9) and helping set up two others.

That is where the magic of Thierry Henry will be measured. In his debut friendly against Tottenham, Bulls fans caught a glimpse of his brilliance. His first touch in possession was clearly a class above his mates, and his ball control left many with mouths agape. Yet nothing was as spectacular as his ability to time a ball, and find the back of the net, which was on full display with his first notch.

What will the combination of these two former Premiership greats produce for a Red Bull side that finds itself desperate for goals? One thing is for sure; even with names like Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy, Jo Silva and Patrick Viera likely to grace the Red Bull Arena pitch, it will be all eyes on Henry and Angel in this afternoons clash against Manchester City.

If you aren’t suffering the heat today, you can catch the game at 3:30ET on Fox Soccer Channel.

Thierry Henry Scores In Debut, But Red Bulls Fall To Spurs 2-1

By: Dave Martinez | Comments 19 Comments

——————————————–

henryscoresThierry Henry is getting paid to score goals, and he didn’t wait very long to justify the digits on his check. Giving Spurs fans a bit of a flashback, and Red Bulls fans something to look forward to, the French legend managed to find the back of the net just 27 minutes into the game. The crowd erupted, the Spurs lamented, and Henry basked in the glow of the moment.

Finally, he has arrived.

Various Reports Link Rafa Marquez Move To Red Bull

By: Dave Martinez | Comments Add Comments

marquezhenryA year ago, there were rumblings of a potential move that would see Mexican central defender/midfielder Rafa Marquez make a switch from mighty Barcelona of La Liga to the New York Red Bulls. This year, the rumors seem to be holding more weight than ever.

(A Barcelona player of talent and class being rumored to join New York for nearly an entire year . . . sounds familiar?)

The Absolute WORST Interview Ever, Starring Good Day NY and Thierry Henry

By: Dave Martinez | Comments 14 Comments

I have been debating posting this hunk of garbage on the site for the past two days. I came to the conclusion that I can not be the only one who suffers witnessing this calamity.

You can thank me later.

Brace yourselves for soccer ignorance, at it’s highest level. And kudos to Thierry Henry for not punching someone in the face.

POLL: Freddie Ljungberg

By: Dave Martinez | Comments 12 Comments

ljungberghenryDuring a rather inauspicious tenure as a Seattle Sounder, Freddie Ljungberg took on many terrible traits as a teammate and a worker. Diver. Cry baby. Injury prone. You name it, and this DP has had it heaped on him higher than a tweenie pile-on at a Justin Bieber concert.

Yes, I went there.

Still, there is no denying his skill set, vision, and poise on the ball, especially when he is in an ideal position to be lethal. If given the chance, he would instantly find a spot on the Red Bulls right wing side, which is currently an empty suit. And where better to excel than in New York, where he would reunite with an old friend in Thierry Henry? That is an easy transition if there ever was one!

Sigi Schmid confirmed that the Sounders organization has given Freddie the green light to find his next team during this very transfer window. So this option has now become concrete.

That leads us to tonight’s poll question: Freddie Ljungberg; Yay or Nay?

Barclays New York Challenge Give’s Red Bulls Chance To Regroup

By: Dave Martinez | Comments 6 Comments

barclaysThe World Cup certainly did the Red Bulls no favors. The New York side waltzed into the break riding a 4-1 record through their previous five games, and have emerged 1-2-2 in all competitions since. Had it not been for the thorough drubbing of the Wizards, the Red Bulls would have been outscored 4-1 in post tournament play. The least the Cup could have done was find a way to highlight and market Thierry Henry on the worlds biggest stage, but that is yet another thing former French National team coach Raymond Domenach managed to screw up!

Thankfully, the team will now enter a two week break from regular season competition. But this break will be like none other. There will be no sandy beaches, late night clubbing or bar hopping for these boys. Instead, they will find themselves in a place where a vibrant atmosphere will serve as the stage for the debut of the leagues biggest star athlete, ever.

The Barclays New York Challenge will pitch your Red Bulls against some of the World’s best clubs, including Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspurs and Sporting Lisbon. As each of these teams prepares for their own seasons, getting players up to game speed, it will be the fans who come out winners, being treated to some of the biggest names in soccer today. Emmanuel Adebayor, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Luka Modric and a host of others have already been confirmed for what will be a friendly tournament of historic proportions. Add Thierry Henry’s debut to the mix, and you have an event everyone can be excited for.
