The Offseason Report: Imagination Land Here We Come!
By: Dave Martinez | November 29th, 2008
Another season has passed, and here we are in the wonderful world of the offseason. The thing I like best about the time off is the ability to let your imagination run friggin’ wild. And this offseason, Red Bull fans everywhere have the ability to do just that, and justifiably may I add!
#1 - The Bulls have more senior spots to play with.
#2 - Roster cuts have already begun, featuring the previously mentioned Gabe Cichero (who claims he left). With such swift action, along with the loss of Jeff Parke, there are mighty holes that need filling. Petke was a nice back rub for the pain Bulls fans have suffered through recently, but it won’t be the biggest move by a long shot.
#3 - We still have a Reyna DP Slot available to lure foreign talent with. And that is always the best speculation there is.
Add onto that list some drama; word is that Juan Pablo Angel is looking for a restructuring of the final year of his contract (aka give me a raise!). And 2008 hero, Dave Van Den Bergh, is looking to begin negotiations to stay with the Bulls.
Ah. Let the fun begin.
IMMEDIATE NEEDS
The priority list will most likely be similiar to the prior year; find a quality CAM to feed Angel, find the right defensive pairings, and secure the midfield. It is rather doubtful that Jorge Rojas would be that midfield CAM option. Perhaps a return to his more familiar and effective left back position would be in better order? And what of Juan Pietravallo? Has that experiment run its course? Will Mac Kandji be the breakout forward option the Bulls are seeking? And will the DP spot be reserved for a CAM, or will another forward superstar draw be what the office is looking for?
Ah, lovely speculation.
Feel free to let your imaginations run wild this season. That means the usual round up of Henry, Del Piero, Riquelme, Veron, Owen and company are all, once again, some how considered viable options, and openly welcome to the party.
Yes, its the offseason. Feel it. Love it. And let your imaginations run free.

Here’s my 23-man roster line-up with subs in parentheses and missing pieces in questions marks:
—————–Angel (???)—-Kandji (Wolyniec)
——-VDB (Rojas)——- ??? (Ubi) ——-Richards (Mbuta)
———-Stammler (Sassano)— ??? (Mendes)
Goldthwaite (Jimenez)—Petke (Boyens)— ??? (Leitch)
——————–Conway (Cepero/Boss)Angel’s sub could be Magee but I don’t have great confidence in him. We could use one of the four developmental slots there in the Superdraft. I agree the biggest question mark is for CAM. Zidane would be fun but would probably turn into another oft-injured geriatric Reyna scenario. We need an NYRB Blanco/Schelotto/Beckham. I say yes, splurge on the DP slot at CAM. Who just said Messi?
I think we need another strong defensive midfielder, like Joe Vide or Dema … oh, yeah, whoops! Stammler’s partner could be Sassano, but that still leaves us a man short for a sub. The last hole is at right back. Leitch did a journeyman’s job in the playoffs but still isn’t a solid starter in my book. I say we kidnap Heaps.
