The French legend has been planting seeds in France, playing Red Bull ambassador in the hopes of attracting his countrymen stateside through interviews like the one he had with football-ravageur, a French footy outlet.

He has some great insights on the successes and short comings of David Beckham, the measure of MLS against other leagues and the possibility of including more French players to the league structure.

Here are some of the highlights:

ON MLS:

What I appreciate in this moment in the United States is that the league is growing by one, even two teams a year . . . Seattle and Philadelphia add a little more quality to the American championship. There will be Vancouver the next year. Everyone hopes for Miami. It is only the beginning. The Americans want a true perenniality in their championship. I think that there will be even more great names. The history of (David) Beckham effected people, but that was also a beautiful story of marketing to promote (American) football. There will be others following his footsteps, I am sure.

WHERE DOES MLS RANK?

It is a good level. I would say between the top of the table in League 2 and the bottom of the Ligue 1 table. It is true that there is not much difference. The Americans are very competitive in everything they do.

HAS TRAINING IMPROVED IN MLS?

Yes, enormously. They rely increasingly on it. When you look in Europe, there are many U.S. investors in major clubs: in England but also in France, with PSG. All they have learned in Europe, they will transmit to the United States. This is where they will be more interesting.

THOUGHTS ON SEBASTIAN LETOUX, THE NEW FRENCH PLAYER IN MLS

He is good and in addition he plays. It’s pretty weird. I must receive a phone call a week from players motivated for the United States asking me for advice. It’s a bit complicated to go. That is why many French break the figure. They think that having played in France, even in England, opens doors. But Americans work differently. You see it in basketball. It must be a name. There circuit is a bit complicated, therefore there are not much French in the United States. I think there will be more next year.

THE FRENCH PLAYERS THAT YOU SPEAK OF ARE USUALLY AT THE END OF THEIR CAREERS?

Yes. The only problem is that Americans want to invest in the young. They will go against their current policy, because with Beckham it went well marketing side but not on the field. They would put the same amount but it goes well on the field.

Is Youri Djorkaeff due for a comeback?

Personally, I love seeing some of the best players in this teams lore come back and make an impact (just as long as it isn’t against the Bulls). I was definitely not on the HATE AMADO bandwagon. Though his play was erratic, and his attitude, at times, a bit abrasive, one can not question his desire to win – and the promise he tried to keep of bringing New York a Championship. Yes, his antics at times contradicted this, and maybe his emotions get the best of him. But his contributions far outweighed his baggage. I loved his style, and personally, would think that he could have been the missing piece to the teams current puzzle.

JPP went overseas, as was expected when we signed him (remember, Colorado let Peguero go because they knew his heart was heading East of the Atlantic), and suffered a tremendous knee injury. He comes back to MLS hobbled, but still standing tall.

Recently on the podcast, I was asked about San Jose. I believe I said something like “There is nothing wrong with building from the back, but the building seemed to stop somewhere in the middle.” They have Ronnie O’Brein with no one to cross to. But that is about to change.

Now can a star in the midfield and a star up top be enough to compensate for both the midfield and forwards? Only time will tell. But if San Jose gets even 3/4ths of the old Peguero, watch out – they will be dangerous.

Nuts and bolts :

We left you last season at yet another brick wall performance against the team I love to hate – The New England Revo-losers.

There were our glaring weaknesses on display, for all to see. Lack of wing play. Mediocre play from our defensive wings. Absolutely no service to the most dangerous forward tandem in the MLS. And a big fat 0 on the goal side.

The list began to be compiled – we need an attacking mid, we need a left back, we need more service from the wings. We need, we need, we need.

So, in an attempt to better our course, we dumped Bruce Arena after a less than glorious reign as coach. In comes Juan Carlos Osorio, magic man who brought the Chicago Fire back from the dead (though I am sure there was some guy named Blanco who helped out situations). And all hopes were heaped on his shoulders.

The signings have been slim. The cuts have been drastic.

And here we are, days away from the first game of the season.

How much have things really changed?

The Stars

As previously mentioned, we feature the Dynamic Duo of MLS forwards – Jozy Altidore and Juan Pablo Angel (dont ask me who is Robin . . . ). Maybe 10 years ago, having that was enough to win an MLS Cup. But in this parity ridden league, you need strength on all ends.

In comes Captain America, Claudio Reyna. Reyna enjoyed a less than stellar year, with reports of a tumultuous relationship with Coach Arena making matters worse. Pile on injuries to this mediocre stew and you have Claudio Reyna, 2007.

2008, however, carries a more positive tone. Reports early and often have praised Reynas play on the field, where he is being asked to play a bit of CDM, his natural position, and CAM, the categorical opposite. And it seems he has been excelling in both areas, even if this display wasn’t quite visible in Carolina (last two games were sleepers, but he did play well in the first).

These are the teams stars, people who we will be relying heavily to carry this team.

The New Comers

Um. Zach Thornton and Oscar Echeverry. So we have depth at goal and the attacking spot.

Besides them, there is this years slew of draftees, headed by Luke Sassano and Danleigh Borman, both who may see time on the pitch as starters. Borman showed some magic in his crosses preseason. Sassano, grit. It will be interesting to track their development as the season commences.

But the most exciting new comer is Juan Carlos Osorio. He takes the cake. And he is carrying this teams expectations squarley on his shoulders.

Keep an eye on

Jon Conway. If anyone on the team is in the position of making this team float or flounder, its Conway. A life long career back up, many Bulls fans are skeptical of his ability to maintain his cool under pressure, come up with the big save, or simply maintain concentration on the pitch. Displays like last years Mendes back pass, or more recently with the mystery goal TFC’s Cunningham scored in the Carolina Cup that was in Conways hands, have fans begging for answers and hoping for the best. This will be Conways job to lose – all season long.

We’ll win the league if…

We avoid injuries, sign a key defender (Chris Innes), or a solid CDM to allow Reyna the CAM position (Lider Marmol). With them, and a healthy Dane Richards and Hunter Freeman, we will have the depth and talent to succeed.

We’ll be in trouble if…

We run into injuries. Why? Our depth cant take it. We will already be without Dane Richards till Summer. Ditto Freeman. We can not afford to plug in holes with rookie players. One more injury, and we will be looking at the Chris Leitches and John Gilkersons of the world to patch us up (in fairness, Leitch has looked ok this preseason).

The Beckham Factor

Will still be strong this season. If he stays healthy.

Thierry Henry, once again, has stated his desire to play in the United States.
