A Great Footballing Weekend

By: Dave Martinez | August 25th, 2008

This was my footie weekend. Fo’ Sho’. Need proof? Well, I will be glad to share it . . . .

#1 – ARGENTINA WINS THE GOLD!!!!!!!

In what was widely considered the best footie game of the Olympics, the Biceleste faught through Nigerian pressure and African style heat to win the Gold Medal. World champs baby! And what a coming out party for Angel DiMaria. This kid has it all; the crossing and finishing ability to be a threat for years to come.

#2 – Red Bulls CRUSH the Dynamo

Just read my last post. That was dominance, without some of our biggest leaders. The cherry on top of an excellent footie weekend.

#3 – Fulham beat Arsenal 1 – 0!!!!

#Wow. I dont care if it isnt Fulhamerica anymore – this is my team in the Premiership, and was I ever proud to see Fulham play with confidence against an Arsenal team that, on paper, destroys the whites. Texan Brede Hangeland was on fire, defensively, and with his clutch goal. An encouraging sign heading forward, especially after that Hull City disaster . . .

#4 – Boca Juniors Steals One Away From Lanus!

In the Bombanera, Lanus actually came out like a house on fire. They took the lead in the 6th minute on a beautiful goal by Sands. But, a bit over 20 mintues later, Fabian Vargas equalized. Lots of ebb and flow to the game, till the 68th minute. Pochi came off the bench and made the Bombanera come off its hinges with a clutch goal for the win. Ahhhh . . . the bliss . . .

#5 – I went to my first Jets game – a win against the Giants 10 – 7

I am about to commit an OFFSIDE SIN. But screw it.

I went to the Jets Giants game, the first American Football game I have attended in my lifetime. I have been a Jets fans since Boomer Esiason was hitting Rob Moore on long bombs towards mediocre season after mediocre season. Through the Vinny years, I was there. Even the Browning Nagle era – I was there. So you can imagine my excitement to have this be my first real game.

I have to say, I was really impressed with the speed, precision, and size of these bastards! Im a big boy, but even Brett Favre makes me look like a malnutritioned homeless kid. I had an awesome time, and would love to attend more Jets games (especially ones that matter!). Check out some pics of the event . . .

Congrats to the Argies for winning Gold. I’m Italian, so at least I have the World Cup to look at lol….Anyway, This Red Bull team is attacking the ball the way Pietra is…..Does anyone else see this? It is like He changed them. I think that was the most dominating performance of the season….Hopefully this continues, If Magee plays the way He is we wont need another striker.
Sorry Dave I’m a Giants fan so lol.

I am so happy about Mike Magee and Juan Pietravallo. I am a guy that always roots for the underdog, and to have Magee take off like this is excellent. And the Argies performances puts a special place in my heart – I am definitely inviting Juan Pietravallo for an Argie style asado (bbq) one of these days.

Congrats again AR*GEN*TINA!!! You forgot to include USA chicas beat Brasil for Gold…Being Italian, anytime Brasil looses twice, men and women beating my name sake, no less, its great. The finals are often anticlimatic, but if you win and its a clean game, then its magnificent. Love Messi, DiMaria, Pietra and my fav. forward mid. Double M! Men of the Week and Golden in my book. p.s. fed ex me that asado!

hey, hold up–let’s give some serious cred to Nigeria. I love to see my African boys do well in major football tournaments, and a silver medal is a great way to do that :D
