Alfredo Pacheco Signs!
By: Dave Martinez | March 5th, 2009
La Prensa Grafica in El Salvadore reports National team defender Alfredo Pacheco has signed on with the Red Bulls, on a $30k transfer.
“El Chele” as he is known will be manning the left back position for the Bulls, a spot Osorio has been trying to fill for the better part of his two year reign. To review; he is a character player, who is tough on the ball, fast on the break, and a goal scoring/creating threat. Plus, he has been the captain of his countries side on various occasions, and is beloved by Salvadorean fans everywhere. Pacheco, along with Jorge Rojas and Juan Pablo Angel, will be expected to be this seasons “go to guys” in their respective positions, leading the team through the various tournaments and regular season games this year already has in store.
And with the signing of Costa Rican right back Carlos Johnson seemingly a breathe away from happening, the Red Bulls have transformed their weakest part of the field into a potential strength. With a probable Petke/Boyens combination in the middle (or Petke/Celades if this continue to move along for the trialist), and wing side defenders like Johnson and Pacheco supporting Cepero between the sticks, the Red Bulls have added strength to a side that was already good enough to reach the MLS Cup finals.
So Pacheco is finally a Bull (well, pending league approval of course). Share in the celebration below!

Dave,
If all those signings happen, can you imagine Celades in the middle of the field and Rojas as a 10 behind Angel with somebody else up top (Kandji)?
Man, now it is taking too long for the season to start.
Cheers

Damn.. It looks like Pacheco’s signing is only a loan.. I really hope we can be able to buy him later on and not mess up like the Jimenez situation :/

Dave,
I posted on Ives’ blog that Pacheco reminds me of Peruvian left back Juan Vargas playing at Fiorentina. They both can push up all the way to the end line (most back make it to the 3/4 line and launch their crosses from there) and are very good on their crosses. And they are both very good with their left footed shots, on the run or on a set piece.
If we had an awesome center back, we could get away with 3 on the back line (if Johnson is anywhere as good as Pacheco on the right side).
Cheers

Who do you think should get cut with this signing?

Chris, I am actually a little confused. I am trying to figure out if the team is in complete compliance OR there are players yet to be signed, so Pacheco would just slide right in. They did pick up a International Slot from San Jose, so maybe he just took Leitch’s spot.
Damn these clandestine contracts!

I have another question as well…Did we drop all of the draft picks except hall? b/c non are on the roster on the website.

Wow. Im so thrilled. It really seems like Coach O has the same goals and sees the same problems as we do as fans.
Shoring up the defensive side – our biggest problem all year – and finding speedy wings who can service Angel or break out in counter attack.
this team is going to have leadership and balance next year. Im really excited.
So Pacheco has been his national team captain as has Rojas. Angel is a major player for his national side. We have a lot of smart vets and leaders to go along with the speedy young prospects as well.
Smart recipe Osario!

Pacheco is a tough player who will definitely improve our team. Let’s hope he finds his place here and eventually stays longer than a year.
Cheers!!!!!

As a Salvadoran, I am now officially a New York Red Bulls fan! Good job on signin Pacheco. Angel’s head will need a couple of headache pills after each game due to all the crosses Pacheco will deliver. NYRB, get ready for a heck of a player!!!
