All The Bull - Andrew Boyens, Jozy Altidore and more
By: Dave Martinez | May 8th, 2008Here are some tidbits on the Red Bulls for this week:
+ As many know, the Red Bulls have signed Andrew Boyens, a central defender with Lurch like height, formerly of Toronto FC, to shore up some depth for our back three. Now the early clammoring has been “Why Boyens? Where is Innes? Did we do enough to get Marmol? But Conde wants New York!” And as always, I am here to be the calming voice in the midst of all this ruckus.
Bottom line? If Coach Osorio is able to make people like Kevin Goldthwaite and Chris Leitch shine, where so many thought they were useless players just a season ago, he can turn around a young 6′4″ central defending beast. So before everyone takes their frustrations out on the young Kiwi, lets see him on the field first - then judge.
+ To make room for Boyens, Michael Palacio has been placed on the season ending injury list. Mike, we hardly knew you.
+ And there is even more shockwaves from one bench riding central defender! My boys at American Soccer Reader started a little bit of a storm yesterday. Eric Brunner has been asked to take a massive paycut by the Red Bulls organization - taking him from 36k (44k garunteed) to 17k at best - a developmental deal.
Sources reported Brunners (obvious) dissatisfaction with the decision, and AMR was told that our first rounder would be holding out of training, perhaps going back home to Ohio. BigAppleSoccer straightened out the situation - it turns out Brunner is “exploring all options.” Stating that the paycut would make it impossible to live in the area, Brunner continues to train with the team until a deal can be reached. Once he knows his footing, he will decide whether he will leave MLS all together or trudge on and suck it up.
+ In an insightful piece by “Ivesinho” Galarcep, Coach Osorio is basically saying that the travel, wear and tear of nearly a full year of playing football is starting to get to our young star Jozy Altidore. Mind you, not so much the playing, as the non stop traveling that can way a young kid down. They may actually sit him out for the big Galaxy game this Saturday night.
+ The third part of the Hunter Freeman interview will be out later tonite/early tommorrow morning. Sorry for the delay.
+ Finally, lets not forget that, just over the horizon is the two headed beast of BECKOVAN awaiting us in LA this weekend. Will Parke, Goldie and Leitch be able to hold them back? Can’t wait to find out . . .

Good read, thanks.
Im a tad unhappy to hear that Jozy might be held back from the LA game because of mental fatigue. Thats not really acceptable to me from a professional athlete. This is a dream job, not a trip to grandma’s. I know hes 17 or whatever but really …
Also any league who offers a player 44k a year to be a professional athlete needs its head examined. The to ask him to go to 17K?? Wow. Is he supposed to pay them next?
lastly Im really looking forward to seeing Boyens. You cant teach Height! So he played for T FC last year? was he impressive? I dont remember him, perhaps because I like to pretend Toronto sports franchises dont exist.

lol My hate for Toronto only grows because they seem to hate us so bad.
And good havin ya back NLR
So, the things with Jozy is that Osorio is the one who is presumably making the call (change him from your Fantasy team!)
And as far as the Brunner situation - ouch. The salary cap being at such a low denomination really makes for tough decisions and cut throat pay tactics. I was thinking about it from my situation - If I were to - say buy an apartment - counting on the fact I would make X amount a year, and suddenly its cut in half by the company that values you SO much they made you their first pick. Makes no sense. It would leave anyone in a huge pickle. And it isnt fair.
RBNY is doing what any corporation would like to do - have its cake and eat it too. They dont want to lose Brunner for Boyens, an unproven commodity. So they are doig whatever is necessary to make that puzzle piece fit. At the cost of Brunners salary.
Now its up to Brunner - is 12-17K really worth the spotlight? Its up to the kid. he can always come work for me as a Cleaning supervisor and earn 25k. See what I mean?

Hmmm, I’ve been wondering why Jozy seemed a bit techy lately. I broke down and got season tickets this year, TRUSTING that I won’t be staring at gridlines next season, and I wondered if we were catching Jozy in a few more brawl-like situations in person than we could see on TV. Whether he should or shouldn’t be burnt out…if he is the coach might be trying to avoid more than further fatigue. OR maybe he thinks Angel needs to be more center stage to get the scoring going.
Being without Reyna against the Galaxy scares me the most. Their match-savvy has improved as much as their offense with the new staff, and its clear how much Reyna provides that for RB.

holy cow - Diane - a fellow season ticket holder AND a Reyna Supporter!?! Where have you been!!!!
Welcome.
Osorio has repeatedly mentioned this week how Angel needs to get a goal and that will be enough to make him forget about his nerve problems and lack of early success. Maybe he is right
But as far as having Jozy sit out for Angels benefit? No matter what, Angel will be quadruple teamed, whether his striking partner is Jozy or Woly. Jozy may even be able to deflect some attention. But I would hope we see the tandem start, and let Jozy sit early by the second half.

Now is the time on NYRB when I talk smack.
SMACK!!
There.
Love ya Dave. It should be a good game! And ditto Diane on not having Reyna. Sorry.

Thanks Dave, I’ve been hanging out over at Laurie’s — with Jen of course. And yes, I arrived with Becks from the England NT, the Premiership and La Liga. Although go figure a cradle to grave LFC supporter appreciating a ManU kid…fortunately most of my family have made the Giggs/Beckham exception so at least I’ve not had to fear banishment.
Reyna: add my husband to the list. As two old footy fans who appreciate where the play starts, when watching live its been clear who runs that machine — at least during the matches we’ve attended. Do the boys often seem a bit less organized when Reyna gets taken out? And yes, of course, Jozy’s ability to draw defenders would make him an ideal strike partner especially for someone who is marked so intensely.
So that’s all a bit scary heading for LA isn’t it?

Add to the sh*t sandwich the fact that Reyna and Stammler will be gone (aka the grit in the back mid), we will have to rely on who? DVB and Ubi? Hmmm…

I sense probe? lol
Sorry ann.
NLR! Yea. I was thinking the same thing. My bet? Jozy will have to start.
And remember, we play 4-5-1 on the road.
REALLY should be interesting.

Wait a sec, New York is still paying Reyna? But poor Brunner is getting pay as much as the kid working at White Castle? Its time to buy out Reyna’s contract and buy another old timer, Brian McBride (god dammit he’s got great hair!).

Hey Akeem (The American Dream) or (The Guy from Coming to America)
Whats happening with Brunner is a CRIME for sure. But if you are going for a way to get my favorite player from my favorite EPL squad, then GET ME MCHEAD!
that may sound wrong . . .
