All The Bull: In Argentina!

By: Dave Martinez | February 25th, 2009

I got a call from my brother in Argentina. With surprise in his voice, he proclaimed, “David! The Red Bulls are here?!” Oh yea, I replied. And if he is reading this, they are going to take out RIVERGUENZA (aka River Plate). Any Boca fan would be proud (even if it is the B-Squad).

This week, all the bull focuses on news abroad! So lets get into the pool, shall we?

- The Red Bulls are taking on a “sort of” B squad from River Plate, according to the Gallinas official site. They will face tomorrow at 9 a.m. our time. The expected River Plate line up will include former DC United midfielder Marcelo Gallardo. Here is the full line up: Daniel Vega, Facundo Quiroga, Mateo Musacchio, Rodrigo Archubi, Martín Galmarini, Nicolás Domingo, Rubens Sambueza, Marcelo Gallardo, Andrés Ríos, Gustavo Fernández, Mauro Díaz, Leandro Chichizola, Lucas Orban, Germán Pezzella, Nicolás Losanno and Eial Strahma GO BULLS! MATA GALLINAS LOCOS!!!

- Speaking of Gallinas, River fans have been clammoring about the return of their prodigal son, el Angel del Gol, Juan Pablo Angel. How do I know this? Because I have access to TyC Sports from Argentina! Thats why! (my homage to Danny Onoda) And because the rumors have already begun down there about “one more season” of their Angel on the squad.

Mind you, River dipped into MLS to pick up Gallardo because they came out dead last in the winter tournament. Fans are hoping that bringing back old vets (as they did with Ortega a year back) will invigorate the team. Too bad. Angel belongs to New York!

- Venezuela loves Jorge Rojas, and with good reason. I believe Bulls fans will embrace him this year as well.

- Meanwhile, the Red Bulls continue to say all the right things. Pietravallo has been interviewed left and right, and is behaving every bit the part of MLS Ambassador, talking about how excited he is to be back in Argentina with “his team.” Jorge Rojas was also gushing about Maradona, and how his addition as coach will inspire younger players in the nationals to go that extra mile. Great PR push (maybe the beginnings of a Red Bull v. *insert Argie team name here* game for the future?!)

- Celades turning lots of heads down south, and has quickly become THE name for the Red Bulls to pick up and sign. Everyone seems very impressed with the Barca/Madrid vet.

- And to tie a little bow on this, the Red Bulls 2-1 victory over Velez was chronicled by Univision, which called the battle “total domination” going the Red Bulls way. For you spanish speakers out there, check it.

  • All the best Angel!
    Thank you for posting!
  • That isn't the first team squad. Yes, it was reserves. And I knew that, hence the dripping sarcasm in the last post.

And Gene - def alot of questions, but there will be less when the team leaves argentina. Maybe they will come back with two proven defensive vets on their side, which would definitely change this seasons outlook!

    Ononda,

I'm pretty sure it was the first squad (it didn't say Velez Sarsfield Reserves so I'm assuming it was the first squad).. Check it out here..

    Also, Dave,

You stated that the start time is at 9 am our time.. You mean CT right? Because on the Red Bulls site it said the game is starting at 7 am ET so just wanted to make sure..

    Thanks

Onoda, get your b*tt on Metrofanatic if it's not already. There was a lot of love for your video. You should be a correspondent for RedBullsReader, get you in front of the camera with that f**k Boston sweatshirt.

Honestly Dave, I don't know what to think or expect from our team. One thing I've learned watching this franchise for some time is that if my hopes are too high they'll get crushed. I do believe this offseason was a lot better than last year's, so at least the club is moving in the right direction.

On the other hand, other Eastern div. clubs have really powered up, or in some cases put the finishing touches on already strong teams. Have we done enough? Will we have a winning record next season and make it to the playoffs, even if we can't get back to MLS Cup? Will we have enough depth to make it to the knock out portion of the Concacaf CL? Will we requalify for CCL or at least qualify for SuperLiga in 2010? Will we have enough depth to make a strong push for silverware in the US Open Cup?

A lot of nagging questions man, I don't know...

Haha! Thanks for the shout out.
Yeah, I'm really excited to see Rojas in action this season with all the positive things I'm hearing.

Dave, do you know if it was a reserve Velez squad Red Bull faced?
