Angel Got Wings ‘Til 2011!
By: Dave Martinez | February 16th, 2009
What a better way to cap off a great weekend than to come to your office, open your e-mail, and find out that the Captain has signed a big extension.
You heard right! The Bulls leading scorer, and MVP finalist, Juan Pablo Angel, has resigned with the team through 2011.
Take that David Beckham!
Clearly, JPA has been a leader and a rock for this team. His scoring constituted for 34% of the goals scored last year. Thats right – every third goal was Angels. And over the course of the past two years, the number becomes even more impressive at 39%.
Simply amazing.
If anyone can argue that Angel hasn’t been this teams offensive engine the past two seasons, stand up and make your voice heard. You will be crushed shortly there after.
THE FLATTERING SIGNIFICANCE
Put this into some context here. Juan Pablo Angel is still widely considered to be an A Class, first level striker worldwide. He is beloved in his native Colombia, and was a very well respected player in three major worldwide club teams, including Colombias Atletico Nacional, River Plate and Aston Villa.
Being an Argie, I heard and have been called about River Plates clamoring to try and resign their beloved Colombian striker. That was late last year, and since, River has tried dipping their hands into MLS for Gallardo. Believe me, it is not beyond the realm of possibility, with Rivers current state, that a solid offer would have been made for Angel. Or take a look at Atletico Nacional, a team that holds a deep tradition for legendary players coming back to the homeland to finish off their careers. But not Angel.
The fact is, Angel has options throughout the world to compete for other teams that would treat him like a King, and pay him as such too. But he decided to hang his boots right here in New York. That, my friends, is what I mean by “A Flattering Significance.” Angel doesn’t have to be here; he chose to be here. And watching the fiasco unfolding in Los Angeles, Bulls fans should feel lucky to have such a stand up individual leading the ranks.
So let the scoring continue this 2009! Rejoice, and as always, comment away!

I’m happy with the signing but I’m just curious, how many good years (like last year) do you think he has left considering he is 33 now? Think he’ll produce at the same level over the next three years?
