Baby Bulls Hand Juventus A World Class Beating, 3-1

By: Dave Martinez | May 23rd, 2010

wolyjuveThe reserve team that has been carrying the Red Bulls through the US Open Cup managed to put in a world class performance against the Italian Giants of Torino. Juventus, sporting names like Del Piero, Trezeguet and Diego in their starting lineup, could not figure out a way to beat the Baby Bulls, walking away from Red Bull Arena with a humiliating 3-1 loss.

Though Juventus controlled most of the tempo in the midfield through the first half, highlighted by the pinpoint passing of Brazilian star Diego, they could not find a way to earn a goal. Sutton played solidly in net, Carlos Mendes continued to play a vital role anchoring the defense, and the team made sure to clear the goal mouth of any chances.

As Juve’s scoring struggles became more prominent, the Baby Bull’s grew bolder. And that is when Irving Garcia became the story of the match. Handling the ball confidently from the right hand side, and causing fits for the Italian defense, his play came as the biggest and most distracting aspect of the home teams attack. By the 50th minute, he made his impact felt with a rocket shot that hit the cross bar, and landed at the feet of Jeremy Hall for the first goal of the game.

Roy Miller, a second half sub who helped turn around the Red Bulls fortunes, continued the onslaught mere moments later, sending in a perfect cross to Conor Chinn in the box, who bobbled the ball a bit, found control, turned and let loose a rocket shot that beat the keeper wide right.

The Bulls continued the second half pressure when Backe decided to let his first teamer’s have some fun. So in came Dane Richards, Seth Stammler and Juan Pablo Angel for Irving Garcia, Conor Chinn and Jeremy Hall, and had fun they did! Minutes after the sub, an inspired Dane Richards managed to streak down the right side, and find a wide open Juan Pablo Angel for the teams final goal of the game.

Amauri gave the Juve fans something to cheer about in the 90th with a beautiful goal that beat an exposed Greg Sutton. But the effort was too little, too late.

Tony Tchani, and Conor Chinn have been making their case all season for starting minutes. Now you can add #99, Irving Garcia to the mix. In the unlikeliest of settings, the Red Bulls rode the backs of their rookies to earn a well deserved win against a team that despises losing; especially in this fashion. Will it earn the trio some extra minutes? And what did you think of the game? Share your thoughts, after the jump!

Ok I was wrong about Woly. I can admit that, he looked great against Colorado last night.

  • mike

Sutton had another solid performance, is it me or does the backline play much better why he is between the post?

  • Larry

My belief is Woly will remain for the season, but will be shipped out next year. With Henry and the others, yes, it is too much room. They need to make space for defender.

  • RobStyles

I have to disagree about Woly. Granted his best days are behind him, he does provide leadership in the locker room and similarly to Petke, has a true sense of the history of the club and the supporters (and all of the pain we have been through) which will play a role as season wears on and they are fighting for a cup. He is a capable backup that is familiar with the league, and he did score 2 goals vs NE in the last USOC Qualifier.

  • I am glad you said Mendes. He has been solid in two 90 minute performances.

Great Atmospere at RBA, The ESC and GSS were at the top of their games and had some clever songs. Juventus were unimpressive. I wasnt impressed with there big 4 players (Grosso, Diego, Del Piero, and Trezeget) Garcia, Chinn, Tchiani, and Mendes had great games. I wouldnt be suprised if we see Chinn and Angel up top soon. Once again Angel had a goal that anyone could have finished but it was a great ball from Richards never the less.

This may be a unpopular comment but it has to be said. Wolnyiac needs to go. All he really did that last game is flop around and kill runs. I know his history with the club and everything but when you have forwards like Chinn, Salou, Agudelo, and Angel he is not going to see that much time.
lets hope we can establish some consistancy with the amount of scoring we saw yesterday into regulr season games

I love Stammler, met him and he's super cool, but with talent like Tchani, Garcia on the bench, Hans might have to start using these guys more often. Love RobStyles comment, because: I enjoyed the best game v. New England and can't wait to see the 'reserves' against Colorado. And though Richards had an assist, he did nothing else and lets face it, that was an easy assist. Garcia has a great shot and superb cross.

  • I feel like Red Bulls beating these exhibition games against big clubs is almost more important in terms of franchise relevancy in the eyes of many new yorkers than anything other than an MLS cup.

That fact that Backe has done it with the reserves should make him somewhat reconsider his starting 11. There is some serious talent there.

Hats off to the supports' clubs for getting the Juventus fans into the game. Their "friendly taunts" got the crowd more engaged. Well done!

  • This was the best atmosphere and performance by Red Bull at the new Arena, hands down. And you can quote me on that!

  • sapo

Backe realizes that we have no reserve league and needs to get these young guys minutes. So when they play a team like santos or juve or u.s. open cup, they are seeing better talent and gain a wealth of football experience then playing a college side. And to all eurosnobs; Juve started 4 regulars, rbny 1.

  • RobStyles

I think Backe is secretly gunning for the US Open and the "Baby Bulls" are his true first team while the MLS regular season squad are really his reserves...that's what it looks like to me.

  • Stu

I couldn't make it today but watched it on FSC. What a great looking side, yet another case for giving the baby bulls some starting game time. Garcia looked like he was having a blast and really showed what he can bring to the game. Chinn seems to get a little tangled when he gets in the box but that will pass with more first team game time. Tchani looked solid and so did the boys in defense. Most of all though, I LOVED watching this game... energy, passion and even a little forward looking creativity. Bring on the rest of the season but let these boys play. I'll be there on Wednesday - can't wait!!

  • baumga85

Great atmosphere and game. I hope Red Bull can start getting some of these fans into the seats for regular games, because it is just such a different feeling when the place is nearly full. Juventus did not look like the "Italian powerhouse" they were made out to be, even with some of their big names on the field. In contrast, our boys looked great, again.
Chinn, Tchani, and Garcia all played like regulars. I wanted to vote Garcia man of the match, but they didnt have his name up. Once again, this shows the depth we have. Now, we need to be dangerous in the league fixtures.
