Baby Bulls Hand Juventus A World Class Beating, 3-1
By: Dave Martinez | May 23rd, 2010
The reserve team that has been carrying the Red Bulls through the US Open Cup managed to put in a world class performance against the Italian Giants of Torino. Juventus, sporting names like Del Piero, Trezeguet and Diego in their starting lineup, could not figure out a way to beat the Baby Bulls, walking away from Red Bull Arena with a humiliating 3-1 loss.
Though Juventus controlled most of the tempo in the midfield through the first half, highlighted by the pinpoint passing of Brazilian star Diego, they could not find a way to earn a goal. Sutton played solidly in net, Carlos Mendes continued to play a vital role anchoring the defense, and the team made sure to clear the goal mouth of any chances.
As Juve’s scoring struggles became more prominent, the Baby Bull’s grew bolder. And that is when Irving Garcia became the story of the match. Handling the ball confidently from the right hand side, and causing fits for the Italian defense, his play came as the biggest and most distracting aspect of the home teams attack. By the 50th minute, he made his impact felt with a rocket shot that hit the cross bar, and landed at the feet of Jeremy Hall for the first goal of the game.
Roy Miller, a second half sub who helped turn around the Red Bulls fortunes, continued the onslaught mere moments later, sending in a perfect cross to Conor Chinn in the box, who bobbled the ball a bit, found control, turned and let loose a rocket shot that beat the keeper wide right.
The Bulls continued the second half pressure when Backe decided to let his first teamer’s have some fun. So in came Dane Richards, Seth Stammler and Juan Pablo Angel for Irving Garcia, Conor Chinn and Jeremy Hall, and had fun they did! Minutes after the sub, an inspired Dane Richards managed to streak down the right side, and find a wide open Juan Pablo Angel for the teams final goal of the game.
Amauri gave the Juve fans something to cheer about in the 90th with a beautiful goal that beat an exposed Greg Sutton. But the effort was too little, too late.
Tony Tchani, and Conor Chinn have been making their case all season for starting minutes. Now you can add #99, Irving Garcia to the mix. In the unlikeliest of settings, the Red Bulls rode the backs of their rookies to earn a well deserved win against a team that despises losing; especially in this fashion. Will it earn the trio some extra minutes? And what did you think of the game? Share your thoughts, after the jump!
