Body Count: Cementing a Rivalry

By: Dave Martinez | May 18th, 2009

One of the great things about being a fan of a young and growing league is that you can actually watch a great rivalry grow right before your eyes, and not be born in 1895 to do so! The past three years, the battles between Houston and New York have been some of the most contentious pit fights you could find. And this weeks tie in the swamp further adds to that short, but fiery history.

Here is the body count for this past weeks game:

- 25 total fouls (17 by the Dynamo)
- 5 fouls by Ricardo Clark alone, who was vital in disrupting the Bulls attack.
- 4 misconducts, including a straight red to Jorge Rojas, in response to Houstons chippy play.
- 1 down and injured Carlos Johnson, who took a beating at the Dynamos hands.

Houston came out exactly as expected; defensive, but aggressive. And that certainly got under the Bulls skin early, especially Rojas, who decided to become a professional wrestler for 10 seconds or so to illustrate his displeasure.

Moments like these are what rivalries are made of. But in American sports culture, one rarely sees this type of animosity between teams who are not interstate or local rivals. That is what makes this particular thing a joy to watch; the teams meet twice a year, yet they absolutely hate each others guts. Look no further than the constant back and forth between Holden and Stammler and you will see what I mean.

I will be the first to admit; watching the game first hand, the Dynamo wanted to play physically, and at times, were especially dirty about it. The Bulls should have been prepared for such a response, especially from a team who isn’t used to the kind of mediocre results it always walks away with after a battle with the Bulls. They have had a chip on their shoulders since last years playoffs, so nothing less should have been expected. Though they came out with a miraculous tie, they were inches away from losing the game by losing their cool.

So what do you think? I know the Dynamo are far below the DC hatred meter, but they must certainly move up into Chicago Fire status. Share your thoughts.

I actually have to put the Fire as the most disliked team with Houston right after and followed by the N.E. revoltings. DC follows.

Houston did play very chippy and very ugly but also played very skilled, which is something I cant say we did.

I cant really accept Rojas’ foul. Im the first to defend a player in a situation like that but his particular foul was blatant, ugly and classless. I dont want to see that kind of stupidity.

Did he want to hurt the goon or was it a message? Either way it was terrible because hurting someone isnt a great idea in that kind of play. There are right times and places to bring the pain. that was not it. If it was a message then the only one who got it was the ref because it was a pathetic one. The only message I can read there was “please red card me and may my team play a man down for the rest of the match. Also Id like to take next week off please.”

loud and clear rojas. thanks for that

I might be through hating DC. In the past couple years they just haven’t been their old selves, and now they are in trouble business-wise, and you just kinda feel sorry for them. Not Dynamo–they are a bunch of f***in’ a**holes. At least Fire attempt to play soccer. I can’t wait for the next match. Dynamo have certainly topped my hate list.

I can’t believe that DCU’s situation actually has Metro fans pitying them. Never thought I would see the day.

My Top Five RB Rivals (in order):

    DC United
    Chicago Fire
    Revs
    Dynamo
    TFC

    Thoughts?

Id totally agree with you on those rivals but for me DC was hated because of the effect that they had on us, their success in the face of our failure and the physical play. I appreciated their team though despite that.

I guess for me I loathe DC when they play us or when they are in our way to the playoffs but I dont hold specific animosity towards them otherwise.

Chi and Houston I want to fail in every way possible including in their efforts to satisfy their wives and keep them from cheating on them and giving birth to children that look nothing like their fathers.

I still hate DC, but I think I’ll also pity them next year when we have glorious Red Bull Arena and they’re still in RFK. Rivalry or not, it’s hard not to empathize with them, and it would be a shame to see them moved.
Also, why TFC at #5? Surely 13+ years of matches with Columbus or LA has produced a more heated rivalry. Am I forgetting an incident with Toronto?

Hey Alex – though TFC is new, their fans have really made them a tough team to even remotely like. Mind you, they threw a beer at Jozy about 2 years ago now and incidents like that, including a couple of confrontations between the supporter groups, have made the hatred more fan than field related. The games are definitely chippy, and the atmosphere plays into that.

lol what an ass. Tell me Mr. Dynamo, where would you rank the Bulls? Lets face it, how much can you possibly hate Dallas when they are that putrid?

    DC
    fire
    dynamo
    NE
    philly (SOBs)

i wish i can rate NE higher, but they haven’t been anywhere as good as they used to be, and their fans are boring as hell. philly’s on the list just cuz they’re philly and their fans have been an annoyance for the past 2 years.

Is there a list for biggest laughing stock? Cause if so I’d like to nominate Galaxy for #1 spot.

Also anyone read about Angel telling off the ref after the game and calling him stupid because of the red card to Rojas? Seriously great job being a Captain, suspend all logic and reason…Everyone Follow me I’m a leader!
