Like many RedBull defenders, Boyens is far better playing in a traditional 4 back lineup. The Seattle game and most of ‘08, Boyens played in JCO’s dream 3-5-2 formation. The 2 Dynamo playoff games and the first 2 Richie games, Boyens is back in a 4-4-2.

He’s likeable & honest (like Danleigh Borman), of MLS quality, hope Richie can get the best out of him. Keep him.

I like him too. I think he’s been very good lately. As far as choking when it matters… it matters now and he’s not choking. Is he the best defender in the league? Hell no. But the guy always puts in a good effort.

He doesn’t make me feel particularly comfortable with our defense. For one thing (that diving header aside–it was only three feet off the ground), Boyens is horrible in the air, which is ironic considering he’s taller than a giraffe. He’s even worse than Kandji (who is about the same in height, more ironically) in the air.

Come to think of it, why the heck do we have all these tall guys on our team who can’t take header to save their lives? Even Dane is better. Petke, Juan Pable, and Shakes (Goldthwaite) are the only guys we have with peroper heading skills.

All positive feelings for Boynes will be smashed into kitty litter as soon as we actually need him.

Hes playing “well” in games that are meaningless. First chance he has to choke hes gonna and in spectacular form. Just you watch.
