Captain Claudio is Coming!
By: Martha | January 24th, 2007
This is in no way a proper introduction to this blog but since I’m late for work, it will have to do.
•I have major, major issues with Bruce Arena. He didn’t kill my puppy or sleep with me and never call or anything, but ever since he arrived in New York, his ego has made it difficult to see the sun. I find his arrogant demeanor and inability to own up to mistakes incredibly grating.
•That whole “Luis Figo doesn’t fit into our plans” thing didn’t help. At all.
•As a result, I’m cynical about 95% of what Arena says, and have a knee-jerk disagreement with many of his decisions, just on principle.
That said? I’m beyond excited about the imminent arrival of Claudio Reyna. Sure, the guy is old (33 is at least 66 in footballer years) and has an insanely hard time staying healthy — but he’s a solid, reliable, experienced footballer and, more importantly, a model professional who will be a great example for the young players who are the real future of the team. He gets it: You work hard, keep your mouth shut, and sacrifice for the team. You wouldn’t think that was too complicated, but since the team’s last captain left the team for personal reasons only to turn up on TV at the World Cup, the Red Bulls are pretty much starting from scratch when it comes to that whole “team” concept.
Reyna will be introduced to the press this afternoon while I’m sitting in an eight-hour meeting, so updates today are unlikely. They will, however, be coming regularly after today whether you like it or not.
