Friday News Roundup, Or: Roberto Carlos is (Probably Not) Coming!

By: Martha | March 9th, 2007

Get out of Marvell's way, bitches.•Big Apple Soccer posted a nice interview with Marvell Wynne yesterday. Nothing earth-shattering in it (Once you get past the horror of this statement: “[Last season] … we were never really set on a certain formation or with certain players, not really knowing what we were doing.” Gee, I can’t imagine how that team wasn’t successful.), but Wynne sounds like a solid, grounded kid who knows he’s got a hell of a ways to go before he fulfills his potential.

•RBNY this week released Craig Capano, who was proving unable to stay healthy. In his place, the club have brought back Chris Leitch, who was just released by the Crew. Depending on who you ask, Leitch is either a terrible, terrible back or one of the hardest workers the club has ever had. Either way, he’s probably coming in cheap and will be ok cover for our backline.

•The latest fantasy target (following in the wake of Figo and Zidane — the word “fantasy” has many meanings in this sentence) is Roberto Carlos, who just announced that he’s leaving Real Madrid this summer. Chances of arrival? Slim to none.

•News of The Goal, that unreleased Claudio Reyna movie, has been going around the MLS blogs over the past few weeks. If you’re super-jazzed about the idea, there’s an interview here here with the film’s director Brian Weidling. He goes into great detail about how: 1)totally awesome Claudio and his family are, 2)expensive the rights for the game footage in the filmsis, 3)the Red Bulls should become the movie’s corporate partner and give the DVDs away at games, and 4)the original film was going to follow not only Reyna, but also Francesco Totti (Totti!) of Italy, Gabriel Batistuta of Argentina, Hideo Nakata of Japan, and Lothar Mattheus of Germany. Man. I bet that movie wouldn’t have faced any distribution problems.

•Highlights from the finals of RBNY’s idiotic totally hip and awesome Futbol de Calle event are finally up on the website. Knock yourselves out.
