Clint Freaking Mathis! Welcome to Five Years Ago.
By: Martha | March 29th, 2007
Wow. Well, all that whining we’ve been doing about RBNY’s lack of big, flashy moves that don’t involve Reyna seems to have had an effect: It’s being reported tonight that we’ve acquired Clint Mathis from Colorado. Um, whoa. It’s interesting that there have been so many noisy rumors and “oh yeah, we’re so about to sign someone” stories coming out of Camp Red Bull during the preseason, and yet this one, big deal (if only terms of the name it involves) was put together in complete silence — full marks to the front office for the full radio silence on this one.
So, Clint Mathis. All I can think about is that hideous mohawk and his frequent attitude issues, though I supposed that might be just slightly unfair. He’s been on a lot of teams in MLS (including the Metrostars, for whom he scored 33 goals in 67 games between 2000 and 2003), and has been in something of a funk since his disastrous time in Germany, but he’s one of those guys whose past makes you think he’s worth having, just in case it all comes together. And when I say “you” I mean “the people at Red Bull who crave attention more than wins.”
Mathis is 30 now and, given the trajectory of his career lately, it’d be a little silly to expect him to come in and explode all over MLS. We do, however, need goals, and he might be able to provide some of those. Additionally, according to our man Ives, he’s good friends with Claudio Reyna, whose presence could provide an all-important steadying influence for the Mathis, who tends to act many hours before he bothers to think.
Is this good or not? Who knows. It’s sort of charmingly optimistic, isn’t it? I’m sure we all will soon be receiving letters from the club ask us to cross our fingers and hope the Mathis Magic of old returns. (If he bombs, just try not to think about how much he’s costing us.)

You’re just trying to crudely fill the gaping hole Edson Buddle left behind. Hah!
