Coach Osorio Leaving Red Bull?

By: Dave Martinez | December 1st, 2008

GolUSA reports Juan Carlos Osorio would leave the Red Bulls for the Green of Cali. Someone ask John Guppy if he is having a flashback.

To some, this is no surprise. It seems that this was the familiar cry of 2007 as well. But this time, it is coming from the horses mouth.

In a one on one interview with Osorio, GolUSA asked why he hasn’t already signed on for the 2009 season;

“I am not completely sure with continuing as Red Bulls Coach,” Osorio was quoted as saying. “I reiterate that the club wants myself and Juan Pablo Angel to continue, but there isn’t much interest in reinforcing the team and the truth is that I don’t want to risk putting myself in the position of suffering huge goal deficits (”goleadas”) in the championships and sub championships of CONCACAF. This is a firm and determining factor in my decision.”

Coach Osorio give’s us some deep insight into the Coaches mindframe and the inner workings of the Red Bull organization. Reading between the lines, one could gather that the Bulls have little to no interest in revamping the lineup much for the next season. Not only that, but in grouping Angel into his assertion, one can contrive from the comments that the Cherubic Assassin may feel the same way as Coach Osorio does.

One would also be remiss in ignoring Osorio’s bitter tone, which seemed to be aimed at the organizations complacency. He feels that 2008 was a good start. Conversely, does Red Bull feel they are only a tweak or two away from Gold? If that is the case, the disagreement couldn’t be more clear.

“With the little we have (talent wise), we surpassed expectations. There are technical limitations to our centrals; the lateral players don’t attack correctly and can’t put up a good cross. We had many difficulties with the length of the season due to the complicated system of the league, but in the final, we compensated with the right attitude and disposition from the players.”

Clear differences.

As this is the first I am reading about this, I am sure you are as well. The next issue promises to include his desire to play for Deportivo Cali of his home Colombia (where he is currently celebrating the holidays) and his eventual dreams of coaching the Colombian Nats. But I have all the information I care about right here.

Where do you side? Does Osorio have the point in this matter, or has Red Bull as an organization earned the benefit of the doubt in this particular instance? Could this be some gentle contract renegotiating by the Coach? Does Red Bull have no interest in improving upon its current product? Share your thoughts with us.

    Lets not jump to conclusions.

I would be surprised if JCO left.

Dave – Im not. Just reporting what I read, and, unlike other times, its from his mouth. Perhaps some posturing for a restructured contract? But him leaving being the conclusion of this wouldnt be accurate.

Good point. I am 50/50 on caring if he leaves. We made the finals but had a crappy season and all of the players he has signed have been crap.

wow! i was hoping the game of musical coaches was coming to an end. the part that bothers me the most is that Red Bull is not willing to improve the team. we’ve got a ways to go, before this team is solid. as for osorio, i have mixed feelings …

Even if he doesn’t leave (and Fire fans have seen it firsthand), who can disagree with what he is saying? RBNY do need some better players, the team WAS NOT very good this year (save the debacle of MLS “playoffs”), and the MLS season itself IS crazy for some teams.

Wow. This is a rotten deal for the fans if nothing else. Osorio has a point. I think we do need ‘reinforcement’. We’ve needed it all season long, and we’ll especially need it going into the Chmpionship League for any hope of putting a dent in CONCACAF. I think the club should absolutely consider this, and I’m surprised it hasn’t.

Now, that being said, If Angel leaves with Osorio, which is pretty much expected at this point, (right?) We’re in for some tough times.

I’m with Phill on getting Henry. Isn’t his contract up soon? ;)

Well here’s the deal.. anyone who has been to the games knows revenue certainly isn’t pouring in from ticket sales. I think JCO needs to take a wait and see approach with the new stadium. Imagine if attendance doubles.. there will certainly be more money to go around. I don’t think I blame the club for being conservative. But JCO needs to calm down a bit a see how things are next year and the year after that.

As far as the club goes…I think its pretty obvious that Red Bull bought the team for the marketing and not the championships. I think the best we can hope for from them is to spend up to the break-even-point. But expecting them to pump extra money in for transfers goes beyond the business model as I see it.

We just need more people to show up for the games so there is more $$ to spend. And JCO needs to be patient.

This is really sad! I too was hoping that we would stop the coaching carousel. I thought that JCO might’ve finally discovered a foundation for this team in 09 then add in a few offseason acquisitions to fortify us. Losing both Columbians would be a disaster for this club. Unfortunately it looks like we took 3 huge steps forward in the post-season only to take 10 steps back in the offseason. Sad, sad, sad.

Some terrible conversations must be going on in Red Bull world for JCO to say something like this. Seriously, this was his “Dream Job” and he took a mediocre team at best to the finals. They have the ability to improve ten-fold with the other DP slot. Fans should be more inclined to come out with the result of this season and the new stadium. It’s just baffling!
