Conway, Parke Suspended For Substance Abuse

Brian Lewis at the NY Post Blog reports Jon Conway and Jeff Parke have both been suspended 10 games as per MLS Drug Policy. They ingested some over the counter drugs that contain both androstatriendione (ATD) and boldenone metabolites. I may not be a pharmacist, but anything that ends with an “o-n-e” should be a sign for any pro player to RUN.

This may explain why both have been the stand outs for the team at the defensive end of the field.

My take? If they knew it was an illegal substance, this is well deserved. If it was an honest mistake, then this will highlight the “power” the MLS “players union” has - will they be able to reduce an excessive 10 game fine for a mistake? We shall see.

So let the speculation begin . . . playoff hopes over? Will the Red Bulls lean on Patterson or Cepero to take them to the promised land? And will they be enough? Can the defense take two huge hits like this?

  This could be the best thing that’s happened to the RB’s in order to have a fighting chance to make it into the playoffs because Conway could very well be the worst goalkeeper in RB/MTS history. GO RED BULLSSSS!!!!!!!!!

  btw Andres, Conway has been ok this year to be fair. But I absolutely get your logic. I would use Cepero or Boss since they have played not too long ago (USL).

  wow…that really bites. to be honest when i read the story i thought: jeez, a fine and suspension for takin the wrong tylenol? but i don’t know the whole story. none of us does. the problem is the playoffs for you all now. and frankly, i hope you make it. my team DC needs you to lose vs columbus but i hope you beat the heck out of them, and you want to know why? because 1) we don’t deserve a spot, 2) we’ll lose anyway and 3) we need people to recognize that something must BE DONE to DC this season, dag it.

  Yea I am a huge Parke fan too. I think that is the visible loss.

  Wong - As far as Conway goes, I was never a fan, but he grew on me this year. I think Cepero will be more than capable of taking that slot - everyone has nothing but praise for the young keeper. If anyone values Waterreus opinion (remember, he is a well travelled vet), he thought Cepero was a stud.

  I think playoffs are still within reach.

  nice. our two best defensive players by far with the playoffs in the balance.

  Id love to know what kind of affect this over the counter drug has. And with this potential issue the team needs to be testing secretly to avoid this

  This will probably cement Conway’s legacy, not in a good way of course. I suspect he will never play for Red Bull again, and I don’t think too many people will be upset.

  Nolan - great point. This really does seal the deal on Conways NY legacy. No one expects him back next year. To think, this is how he will end his first year as a starter.

  Ive been researching the drug too btw - and I cant find a damn thing.

  Jest - its practically 10 months . . . October till sometime next summer? 10 games is excessive IF its a mistake. If not? Well deserved.
