Dane Richards: Not the Savior, But a Maybe a Spark

By: Martha | March 22nd, 2007

Mr. Dane RichardsIves Galarcep (AKA The King of the Online RBNY World) has a season preview up at Soccernet and, like pretty much everyone else, he’s not overly optimistic about 2007 for RBNY in terms of a vast improvement over last year’s results. Really, there’s not a lot of mystery going into the season (apart from where we’re going to get goals): Everyone knows Reyna is our best player and, if he can stay healthy, will be one of the best in the league. Everyone knows that Marvell has phenomenal physical skills and is improving at a satisfying pace. Everyone at least thinks the Walrus will give us a huge lift in the net. Everyone knows our centerbacks aren’t the most reassuring guys on earth. It doesn’t take an expert to know any of these things — not even someone who’s particularly observant, or has been around the team at all during the preseason.

Having been around the team off and on over the past few months, though, Ives can add some observations on rookies, and what he’s got to say about Dane Richards (profiled here) is exciting as hell, especially given the fairly predictable nature of the rest of the team. According to Ives’ piece, Richards has been so impressive that he’s come close to breaking into the starting line-up — and this on a team in which the midfield is the most solid area. Plus, he’s fast as HELL — imagine Richards and Wynne playing together on the right side. Mmmm … pace. Sort of makes the mouth start to water a little bit, doesn’t it?

That’s it, I’m going to let myself be optimistic, just for the next half-hour. I promise I won’t make this sort of weakness a habit though, don’t worry.

I think Red Bull might exceed expectations this year - by which I mean they might get into the playoffs in a spot higher than fourth. Then again, given what MLS did with the playoff format, I’m not sure what this will look like beyond saying they won’t be the last team into the playoffs…but I think they’ll make the playoffs.

i had the oppertunity to see dane richards play in highschool, he was a class above the rest, skill, pace, intelliegnce, phenom, i can only imagine what he will do for new york, already with three goals during pre-season, i think he’ll compliment reyna in the midfield , always giving him an option when forwards get closed down, plus e has the skill to kill any defender in the world
