DAY DREAMING: Forward Options
By: Dave Martinez | June 17th, 2008
Now that Jozy is gone, and a game we played in Washington clearly displayed our deficiencies, who is out there in the market that can take his place?
Time to throw random names against the wall. Maybe one will stick
JAY JAY OKOCHA
Jay Jay was released from Hull City a few weeks ago. Rumors link him to a player/coach position in Accrington Stanley Football Club League II England. Once reknown as a dribbling god, Jay Jay may still have the goods to get the job done. That, or he can be another Pablo Wanchope, or dare I say, Denilson.
ARIEL ORTEGA
Simeone and Ortega once again made an amazing combination, this time as coach and player, winning the Argentine Clausura with River Plate. Though Ariel is a “gallina” through and through, the temptation of playing in a low pressure, high paying, first world country may be enough to give Ortega the next challenge in his long and colorful career.
JARED BORGETTI
Seriously, you guys know what he can do. And it pains me to list him here, but an option is an option, even if it comes from the enemies camp . . . The Dynamo are pursuing, so why not?
EL TIN DELGADO
Sitting on the bench for potential South American Champion Quito (cross your fingers!), El Tin was a major cause for chatter in last years transfer windows. Will someone take a chance on the enigmatic Equadorian legend?
PAUL DICKOV
This is an MLS Rumors exclusive - so take it as you wish. But he is someone with connections to some players in our stable, and would be a forward upgrade for sure.
MARTIN PALERMO
I cant mention a “gallina” without giving “bostero” options. Martin Palermo, the long time Boca Juniors target man, presents an aerial threat the likes of a Brian McHead. Palermo, playing along side a healthy Juan Pablo Angel, would quickly erase memories of forwards past. Besides, his name is always being volleyed about during transfer windows the past two years, even with MLS - so why not bring him up again.
CLINT MATHIS
Hey. Why not?

I think of Ortega as more of an attacking Mid then a forward, but you guys don’t really have one of those either do you? I would like to see him in the league, but I don’t think his 34 your old frame would handled Giants Stadium any better then Reyna’s does.

Ortega is def a CAM - but like you said - couldn’t we use him? Besides he grew up playing forward so why not. 2 birds 1 gallina millionario.

What’s with all the forwards?
With the worst back line in the MLS, I figure that would be the #1 priority. Unless you’re literally trying to become the Gals of the east.

Sal - very true. But I cant help but hate a 4-5-1 formation, and another forward would make it go away.
But you want to talk about the backline? How about the midfield people say they have?
The point seems to be - every section of the field needs help. I just chose to focus on forwards because I truly HATE the 4-5-1. Personal bias.

The problem with the 4-5-1 is that it is effective…when your team is REALLY GOOD at controlling the pace of play, and your striker is godly.
This team needs more of everything, and realizing that suddenly they’re pretty toothless, and now need to attack constantly might just be the first step.Posted from

Matt - thats my argument. A 4-5-1 without a 1 that has some teeth to em threatens no one. So every team will play physically and shut us down. MLS is about as hockey as any soccer league can get - contact is everywhere. We should at least try Mega as a lone striker, or he and Woly in a 4-4-2.

So true, but a few good Defenders and a decent midfield wouldn’t be half bad either.

One person on each section of the field needs to be signed - have been saying it since Jozy left. Someone toss us a life vest . . .
