Discovering The Lider - The Marmol Saga continues . . . .
By: Dave Martinez | March 5th, 2008
In this unique league we face . . .well . . . unique problems.
Most of these issues stem from our leagues structure, rules and regulations - rarely from what we see on the pitch.
Whether its “allocation money” or “international slots,” or a host of other phrases only found in the lexicon of the MLS, fans feel confusion, pain, and more often then not, heartache, at the effects of these rules.
Here is a clear example.
Lider Marmol - this man is currently in Austria, training with the Red Bulls. Marmol represents something we have been looking for the entire off season - a potential left wing man, maybe even a CAM, for Osorios 3-5-2. That, along with a left footed left back, has been the agenda of the offseason.
With the Compliance deadline in our rear view, and the expansion draft yielding nothing, the importance of having invitees to camp becomes even more magnified - they are the last hope of depth for a squad to succeed.
Marmol has been impressing all week in camp, hitting shots that have been leaving our coach with the best of impressions.
But like anything in this league, there is a hitch.
Everyone, I would like to introduce you to the “Discovery Claim,” another quaint and annoying guideline the league has put out there to further muddy already merky waters.
(E.) DISCOVERY SIGNINGS
Each team has the opportunity to make six (6) discovery signings per season. The last day for discovery player signings is September 15, 2008 - coinciding with the roster freeze date and trade deadline. The six Discovery signings can be used to fill senior roster spots only. If multiple teams claim the same player using a Discovery, the team that filed the claim first will have first rights to the player. Discovery claims expire following each season. If a player was unable to come to terms during the season, the team that first filed the discovery retains the right of first refusal in the event the player is signed.
Red Bull New York filed for discovery on Marmol on December 12th.
The Fire, who have never seen the man in their camps this offseason, but had interest in him over 12 months ago, claimed him December 11th.
The rules, in this instance especially, can be bent to hurt your opposition just as much as they can help your own team. The Fire, aching over the losses of Osorio and feeling the sting of defender Condes vocal desires to play at Giants Stadium, seemed to have used the rules to there advantage, to poke the preverbial stick in the eye of the Bulls.
Now, after weeks of training, and getting into a game shape, all on our dol, Chicago has the right to claim the player over us.
You tell me how that is fair, right or just.
If there is conflict, and the MLS board falls to the side of Chicago on this issue, it will just be another example of the disillusionment that we, as MLS fans (especially Metrostar fans), experience. And once again, it wont be from the play on the field, but the bumbling of the front offices.

I will never understand MLS rules. I just hope the contract is too high for Chicago so they can just pass up on him.

Your quote from LA Galaxy blog - “So fascism is just being used wrong - its left wing.”
Sorry Dave. You are confusing fascism with communism. Communism leans to the left and fascism leans to the right (especially in today’s global political climate). Politics 101.

Read Coreys post anony - I tend to look at it in that way. The classic wording has lost its meaning is all.
Communism is definitely left, but fascism consolidates all power into the government and then distributes wealth in many forms to its subjects with a predetermined notion that they know what is best - government control, government dependency - classic left leaning tenants.
Always down for a debate though.

You posts suggests that you are approaching this analysis from a wholly right wing point of view…deflect all negatives to the left. I now understand where you are coming from and nothing I say will make any difference. Whatever floats your boat.

oh hell no, not at all - its just my stance in this PARTICULAR area. Believe me, I have the popcorn out for this Obama / Hillary thing! But like i said before, I am always up for debate pal, and all points of view are welcome.
Ask me about immigration and abortion - you may get different answers! =)

as long as you were approaching it rationally and not like that non-fiction best seller that tries to portray Hillary as Hitler based on similarities between fascism and modern socialism/active government as employed by many developed nations in the modern world. When I worked in the book store that was exactly the type of book that I’d try not to let be prominently displayed (of course it was usually based on what non-fiction books did we have in enough quantity-actually tried to avoid politics at all if I could find a nice biography or science book but this was at a DC Airport- and we also had some complaint about Anti-Bush bias but most of those were on the top 10-New York Times Non-Fiction Best seller shelf- not much you can do about that).
As to discoveries, the system is more fair than the accustations that could be leveled against MLS if they didn’t have a clear priority in negotiations or if they had the old pre-discovery system (league finds a player than places him on a team). The league pays and technically represents the team in negotiations (though reality has changed and they typically rubber stamp after negotiations), they can’t represent two teams at once without allegations of dishonesty and date that the paperwork was filed is the most objective and least vulnerable to allegations of bias of any method. If RBNY hadn’t poisoned the well for negotiations with Chicago so thoroughly (as they have with Columbus previously) they could probably get those rights for a low draft pick. But Chicago wants blood and they’ll get it whenever and however they can.

Thanks for your response, Dave. I’ll take your word on this issue. I was trying to come down 50/50 on the classic definitions of communism and fascism. It just appeared to me that you had a slight bias to the right. If I was wrong in that assessment, I apologize. No harm, no foul. Peace! Now on to the beautiful game.

how did the retarded rules for the MLS - designed IMO to protect the teams from going bankrupt by spending too much cash without a fanbase {ala North American Soccer League} or to protect small markets from major ones {unless they are LA} - turn into a diatribe on fascism vs Communism?
for what its worth fascism is usually defined as the individual’s rights being totally at the will of the state and the state being corporate controlled, often with a religious aspect. Communism usually is defined as the individual’s rights being totally subservient to the greater will of the ‘people’, usually represented by the state. however without a religious side or a corporate side.
oh man, now Im doing it.
Anyway Fuck the fire and the MLS’ rules that to take away our players - be it a communist or fascist conspiracy!!!

lol
Once again. No Lay Up gets it all right.
And to put a nice bow at the end of this? It really sucks that the possibility exists that lider marmol may be in a Fire kit this season.
