Don’t Call It a Comeback: RBNY 2 – Galaxy 2

By: Dave Martinez | July 19th, 2008

Another exciting game at Giants Stadium in front of a boistorous crowd of nearly 47 thousand tonight, as Landon Donovan manages to find the back of the net near extra time to steal a point away from the Bulls.

Down 1-0 early, the Bulls desperately fought back. Dave Van Den Bergh buried a back heal pass from Jorge Rojas. In the second half, after minutes had gone by without an RB attack, Angel absolutely abused Vanney and Cronin with a little chipper over their heads that found the back of the net.

Then, Donovan does what Donovan does. With a needed assist to the field turf, Lando found the back of the net on a cross gone right.

You have to hand it to the Galaxy – their attack is beautiful – one touch / pass attack, quick on the ball, able to cause major fits to any defense. And with weapons like Beckham, Ruiz, Klein and Donovan commanding their offense, it is really no surprise they were able to pull off such a late surge.

An exciting tie game overall.

MAN OF THE MATCH

MEN of the match should be Rojas and Van Den Bergh. And though Vandie earned a gorgeous goal, Jorge Rojas was all over the pitch, creating the types of opportunities that this team hasn’t seen in a very long time. With his arrival (and 2 assists), Rojas has helped break the 1 goal or less streak that has haunted this team for over 2 months. On his debut, he showed us the kind of midfield creativity that hasn’t graced a Red Bull pitch since the days of Amado Guevara. Thats what makes him Man of the Match.

TURNING POINT OF THE MATCH

Lando’s game tying, pond skipping, turf induced goal. Horrendous.

WHAT THE *##@*@!* MOMENT OF THE GAME

Lando’s game tying, pond skipping, turf induced goal. Horrendous.

SPECIAL ED PLAYER OF THE MATCH

I dont want to be cruel, but the worst performer on the pitch was once again Oscar Echeverry. Unlike prior games, he had two excellent goal scoring opportunities and he did everything right – but find the back of the net. Two times, stuffed, right in front, wide open. Besides those moments of brilliance, his touch was once again off, and he exhibited some considerable pain while jogging, especially in the first half. As has been speculated, Oscar may very well be playing injured. Either way, Osorio keeps coming back to him. And I havent the slightest idea why.
