Finally, Angel And Henry Will Take The Pitch

By: Dave Martinez | July 25th, 2010

102919663CT025_THIERRY_HENRWill Juan Pablo Angel and Thierry Henry be the offensive dynamo everyone expects to see? Red Bull fans will get their first glimpse this afternoon as both are expected to start the game against Manchester City in the Barclays New York Challenge.

Currently, the second place Bulls have accumulated 18 goals through 16 games; hardly a score line to hang their hats on. The midfield has been less than inspirational, with only five assists all season long, three at the feet of Joel Lindpere. Still, Juan Pablo Angel has managed to find the back of the net, against all odds, producing half of the teams goals (9) and helping set up two others.

That is where the magic of Thierry Henry will be measured. In his debut friendly against Tottenham, Bulls fans caught a glimpse of his brilliance. His first touch in possession was clearly a class above his mates, and his ball control left many with mouths agape. Yet nothing was as spectacular as his ability to time a ball, and find the back of the net, which was on full display with his first notch.

What will the combination of these two former Premiership greats produce for a Red Bull side that finds itself desperate for goals? One thing is for sure; even with names like Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy, Jo Silva and Patrick Viera likely to grace the Red Bull Arena pitch, it will be all eyes on Henry and Angel in this afternoons clash against Manchester City.

If you aren’t suffering the heat today, you can catch the game at 3:30ET on Fox Soccer Channel.

    Salou has been really solid this year but he's completely redundant. There should be teams willing to trade for him, even if it just gets us a future pick or so
  • Chris
    Woly has been offered a coaching job. They probably see Chinn and Agudelo playing more so than Woly in that role long term.

    My bet is they would love to keep him with the team in that position while Salou can be used for trade value.
  • baumga - while they may be true, Ibrahim should be the one to go, not Woly. I really don't see the club's thinking on this one. He is 31 so they can't say that they looking at a better long term decision in keeping him. I'm slightly baffled on this one.

    Wally Pipp, Don Majkowski, Tony Fernandez, Ennis Whatley. Scratching your head? These are the solid players who where shown the door when stars came to town.

    Wally Pipp -> Lou Gehrig
    Don Majkowski -> Brett Farve
    Tony Fernandez -> Derek Jeter
    Ennis Whatley -> Air Jordan
    John Wolyniec -> Henry?

    I liked Fun Games the best. One jump above Gabriel. Just wonderful.

    Did anyone else think that Marcos Paullo kid didn't look bad for the short time he played. He was constantly drifting into the middle, which opened up a really nice ball that he played through to Borman (I believe). How does this trial thing work? Is there a time limit or a certain criteria for games he can play in?

    no glimpse no glimpse lol. great day yesterday. loved it. now, when can they pitch a big tent for the beer garden!

    Awsome win today.

    Kandji played great and is really making difficult for Hans to NOT find a spot for him in the lineup. At least, he is the obvious third choice striker.

    Dane scoring blew my f***ing mind. I didn't know he knew how to hit the back of the net.

    And Dave, yes, you a jinx lol

    Hopefully we'll see them together against Houstan.
  • Cindy
    LIES!!!! haha
  • Chris
    Nah, he just didn't play due to the wet conditions. No need to chance wet grass on a still recovering ankle.
  • baumga85
    Did Angel roll his ankle again in warm ups?
  • You can call me "the jinx" :/
