Five DP’s, Zero Goals; Red Bulls Tie Chicago On The Road

There were millions of dollars running around the pitch of Toyota Park last night, by far the highest investment in MLS history, yet no one was able to find the back of the net. That was the story in last nights game, as the Bulls went offensive on the road, but could not manage to buy a goal in a nil nil draw.

In a playoff like atmosphere, the Red Bulls shone a spotlight on the possibilities this team could create. Juan Pablo Angel continues to look like he has found the fountain of youth, creating the first scoring opportunity for the Red Bulls off a diving header that glanced left and into the hands of Chicago keeper Sean Johnson. Minutes later, the Colombian star found a streaking Thierry Henry jetting forward, who broke his defense and put a low shot on goal which was also covered up nicely. The Fire ended the first half with a little DP flashiness of their own, as Brian McBride lead a beautiful counter, running into the attacking third on the far right and sending a well placed, cross field lead pass to the foot of Freddie Ljungberg, who miscalculated the run and sent a sure goal well left of the net.

Consequently, the Red Bulls had quite a scare of a different variety. Thierry Henry was subbed out for Dane Richards after pulling up lame with a groin strain. Though it seems the type of injury typical of a man who has not seen playing time in months, the Bulls would take no chances on their Million Dollar Man’s dime, taking him out before the half.

The second half was pure Red Bull dominance, and it would take no time for the Jamaican right winger to prove his worth in Henry’s place. Off of a perfect lead pass by the newest Red Bulls DP, Rafa Marquez, Dane Richards used his speed and some clever foot work to break his defender, find open space in the box, and send a gorgeously delivered pass right through the mouth of the net, where an on coming Macoumba Kandji stutter stepped and ultimately mistimed a shot which was a sure goal. That was only one of a plethora of opportunities the Senegalese striker was to squander. Minutes later, Juan Pablo Angel sent a screamer on net, where Sean Johnson once again came up huge for his side, batting the attempt away.

Angel would continue his trigger happy ways. As the game came to a close, he sent a screamer just over the cross bar off of an Ibrahim Salou feed. Tim Ream decided to get in on the action as well. A well placed corner landed by Kandji, who calmed the ball and lead a pass back to the rookie defender, who turned, and put a scorcher on frame, where Johnson was once again ready and able to turn the shot aside. Not to be outdone by the rookie, the Cherubic Assassin would end the game on yet another dangerous glancing header that was turned aside for the Red Bulls final challenge on net.

Though this was, in many ways, a disappointing loss, the Bulls showed what their new signings and new attitude can produce on the pitch. Juan Pablo Angel is an inspired player once more with the quality the team has accumulated. Though his first half was clearly a mixed bag of results, Rafa Marquez showed how his vision and touch could be a dangerous asset for the team, especially through his play in the second half. For all his misses last night, Macoumba Kandji is proving to be a handful for defenders, and a consistent threat at net. And the midfield, in general, is beginning to take better shape.

Add a point in the bag, and one could say the Red Bulls walked out of Toyota Park, winners.

    1. RBNY dominated that game, even more so in the 2nd half. Should have captured the 3 points. But a road point is better than no point. RBNY still has finishing issues. But, I am patient, and I think the goals will arrive. 2. Marquez was awesome. 3. Please Henry, be healthy for Wednesday, I beg you. 4. 22 shots to 5. Look at the first 10 games or so, I believe what we all complained of was RBNY being outshot every game. Proof = Bouna leads the league in saves. Now RBNY is outshooting a quality squad on their sorry ass pitch.bitch.

I wish Kandji could get his finishing down. He was there for all the oppurtunities but he just couldn't get the concentration down. Marquez played a role similar to that of Andrea Pirlo in Italy. He helped to dictate the game and he deffintely controlled the tempo. Henry also has some chances to score but he, just like Rafa is coming in rusty from summer vacation. When's our next game?

Wednesday Giu. We are getting there. Keep in mind - Kandji is coming off of yet another set of injuries. Not exactly in game form either. Kid has flash and moves, but needs more consistent pitch time to be the threat we all expect.

wait till the red bulls come home to the stadium....we won't lose another game there the rest of the season

I was at the match last night. It was pretty awful to watch, and not just because my last live match was at the Camp Nou. It was reactive instead of active. Henry was coaching/hectoring when he wasn't walking around. Ljungberg was invisible. We thought he was still in Seattle. Nery Castillo kept lining up offside. Marquez was solid, but there was nothing around him. It was kind of a bummer. The Red Bulls looked far more likely to score than the Fire. Once Angel got really active, you were a lot more dangerous.
  • Ljungberg had some dangerous runs, Kev. And keep in mind - Marquez and Henry are both getting back into game shape. Give it time. From an RBNY stand point, it was a hell of a watch.

Marquez took control of the Red Bulls Midfield which was a great sign. I really liked how Ream and Mendes controled the back. Im becoming more of a fan od Mendes as the weeks go on. Kandji had a few good opertunities but you cant take away anything from Chicagos keepers. He played an amazing match
  • I feel they just didn't get lucky tonight. they should have had it, and kept fighting for it until the very last minute. Still props to Johnson for some great saves, as Ream almost had an amazing goal.

I agrre with Dave. Wait until the players are in shape and begin to be familiar with eachother. My father is a very big eurosnob and he was impressed with the quality of the game.
  • My father is all about quality soccer, and not only did he sit through the entire matchup, he skipped dessert, and hanging with the rest of the family during dinner to watch with me! Says alot . . . very entertaining game last nite. And much props to Ljungberg, who looked dangerous out there for the Fire.

Hey, my father also enjoyed the match. He like to watch Euro and Ecuadorian soccer and yesterday he finally admitted MLS quality is better than Ecuadorian soccer. He too watched with me and was impressed by the Red Bull's offense. I hope Red Bulls can play with that confidence for the rest of the season.
  • As usual its hard to figure out RBNY but in the end I am just beyond excited to see us play great soccer for 90 minutes and that is with the "old" team for most of the second half. I really do hope we make the playoffs but even if we don't I feel we finally have a team to be proud of. Two rookies (Ream and Tchani) are playing as if they are seniors on the team, three low profile signings (Lindpere, Miller, and Albright) are all a step up from what we had before and even some players I still think should be let go are showing sings of improvement (Coundoul, Richards, Stammler, Mendes and Ubi). Anyway even though we ended up with 2 points instead of the 6 we should have had I can't help but to feel good.
  • Winless streak now at 5 (0-1-4). Big road stretch is over, but RBNY down to 5th in league table. NY MUST take at least 4 points v TFC over next two weeks.

Our finishing last night was a travesty of a mockery of a sham.
  • Maybe I am being too positive, but I am glad to see offense on the road - period. If this is the first glimpse of this new team, I think it is a pretty good one.

Dave, I couldn't agree more. I don't know how everyone is so annoyed we didn't walk away with 3. OK, Big Mac could have farted on that ball and it would have gone in, but other than that ALL of the quality shots were well covered by the games MVP, Johnson. That kid was great!
We showed a lot of promise against a solid team in a very hostile environment. Walking away with a point AND confidence into a tough week is a plus.
