Good News, Bad News: Dufty and Kandji

By: Dave Martinez | April 16th, 2009

So what is the best way to reward a player for a great game?

Cut him!

Alec Dufty, after being named Man of the Match right here on TORB, has been waived to make room for Alfredo Pacheco. Though he was still with the team as of yesterday, his days with the Bulls are numbered.

As for Mac Kandji, he achieved “asylum” status in the United States, allowing him to now be able to travel out of the country with the team, and ultimately, making him a United States citizen (one step closer to the USMNT!). And what is an asylum status?

Wikipedia, do your work once more:

” . . . a person persecuted for political opinions or religious beliefs in his or her own country may be protected by another sovereign authority, a foreign country, or Church sanctuaries (as in medieval times). Political asylum should not be mistaken with modern refugee law, which rather deals with massive influx of population, while the right of asylum concerns individuals and is usually delivered in a case-to-case basis.

The United States honors the right of asylum of individuals as specified by international and federal law. A specified number of legally defined refugees, who either apply for refugee status overseas, as well as those those applying for asylum after arriving in the U.S., are admitted annually.”

Kandji’s status change ultimately makes room for another international spot on the teams roster. And more over, he will now be able to compete in the upcoming CONCACAF Champions League games.

I liked what I saw of Dufty much better than Cepero so thats a shame.

When are the CONCACAF games? any scheduled for Giants Stadium? I haven’t heard much about it

This would be why the smaller roster sizes kind of suck. It seems like all the teams are having to cut good players where last year they’d just say, “Meh, give him a developmental contract.”

It’s amazing what a difference four slots can make — maybe not from a perspective of who will actually get playing time in a real game, but definitely from a mental perspective.

Also, there was a rumor that Dufty would be heading our way just for the weekend while Keller’s suspended and Eylander isn’t 100%, but I haven’t seen anything since.

I thought Dufty had a decent game, actually – was kind of sad to hear about this. Of Course, we didn’t really give him a great amount to do, but still, I thought he did pretty well. Unlucky son, but i’m sure he has a future and we’ll see him again. Then again, I said something similar about Zach Wells when he went to DC…

What can you do though, honestly? You can’t carry 4 keepers with such limited roster space, that is just ridiculous. Say what you want, but to say that he is better than Cepero after only 3/4 of one match is a far stretch. The only option I can see would be to cut Boss but I think there may be some rules about that being that he is currently injured. As fans we fall for players a bit prematurely at times and this is one of those cases. It had to be done.
