Good News For Toure, Ubiparipovic, Not So Good for Philipakos
By: Martha | February 28th, 2007
As usual, our man Ives Galarcep has the latest word from Red Bulls camp. (He gets to go, don’t you know. Gotta get me one of those press cards. And a job that allows me to go to New Jersey for hours at a time in the middle of the day. Anyone got any leads along those lines?) Among other things, Ives confirms the good things we’ve been hearing about trialist Ansu Toure and rookie Sinisa “Mr. Sinister” Ubiparipovic — both of whom he expects to make the club — and also has encouraging words about resident badass Dema Kovalenko, whom he described as “underrated,” and “the most impressive player in training [yesterday].” Can I get a hell yeah? How can you not love Dema?
In addition, Ives’ is another voice of doom for poor Peter Philipakos who showed up a few weeks ago after the collapse of his playing career in Greece. Word on him hasn’t been good from the beginning, with questions about everything from him fitness and attitude to his ability — on the day Ives was at training, Philipakos was so bad that it seemed almost impossible he’d make the team. And, what do you know: Today comes word that he’s officially parted ways with the club ahead of their departure for LA on Friday. Though both Arena and Agoos tried to be nice by mentioning “other opportunities” they didn’t want to keep the lad from, the fact is that he was in terrible shape and wasn’t doing anyone any good taking up a space in camp. Cold, I know. But hey, that’s life at the top. Or, in the big city, anyway. At the Meadowlands?

I saw Ansu Toure play for Minnesota last year. He has a lot of promise for sure.
If you wear one of those hats that say “press” on them we’ll work on getting you a card.
