Goodbye Giants Stadium!

By: Dave Martinez | October 21st, 2009

bye giants stadiumThis is it.

October 24 will be the end of an era (error?) for New York soccer. Toronto FC will be the final opponent on that cursed rubber pitch that has haunted this franchise for 14 years now. Yes fans, the day has come. It is finally over.

No more unpredictable bounces. No more turf burn. No more NFL lines (THANK GOODNESS). No longer will a cavernous stadium of 70,000 seats over shadow the people who are there to fill them. No more issues with security personnel who never understood the nature and culture of soccer (hopefully). No more spiral staircases. No more anonymity in a stadium that is supposed to be called your home. No longer will the team be forced to perform on a pitch that was once described as an equivalent to the dilapidated Estadio Saprissa in Costa Rica for it’s shabby surface. No more holding your breath every single time a player hits the concrete turf awkwardly. No more will this burden of a Stadium interfere in the way the beautiful game is supposed to be played. Period.

So let’s close the chapter on this concrete swamp with thoughts of Kentucky Blue Grass, 25,000+ seats (that have the teams logo plastered all over them), walls honoring a history of MetroBull soccer that has been denied the fans for so long, and a quality place for the team to call home. That will be Red Bull Arena, 2010.

Though you may have had your historical moments in New York soccer history, oh Giants Stadium, you have been the bane of this franchises existence for far too long. It’s time to turn the page. Finally.

    @Steve, I'm Row 8, just a few rows back.

    Fifth Row next year for me. Anyway, I was at the Arsenal v Birminham game this Saturday, and the folks there seemed excited that NYRB has a new stadium, especially the prices, but the English are keen and aware of MLS, believe it or not. On another note, Emirates Stadium is TOP NOTCH! Everytime Arsenal scores, they chant toward the supporters section "WHO ARE YOU, WHO ARE YOU, WHO ARE YOU" for about 90 seconds. Great Stuff.

    Well put mr martinez. Wish I could go to the game. I would try and start the chant at my seat if I were there
  • BMATT - LOVE the idea. And Shane - I am definitely down for a RB Arena chant. Throughout the entire game.
  • In fact: that would be a sweet april fools for the red bull front office to play

    I'm pretty sure that they're just painting the football lines on the new pitch.

    Can we please start a "Red Bull Arena!!" chant towards the end of the game?? Dave, I'm over in section 113. Want to help start it up? Around the 90th minute? Everyone else, you should help start it up too.
  • Mike, I hear what you're saying. It's a shame that the end has to come to THIS, but in a way, it is almost poetic . . .
  • This is the last match in the 4-game plan we bought at the beginning of the season, and we're debating whether or not we want to go... :(
