Home Opener, 2010
By: Dave Martinez | September 21st, 2009
Red Bull Arena. The mere thought of what will be has fans going to the bathroom to change their underwear. It is that good.
So what better way to kick off a the new digs than playing our dreaded rivals in what should be the hottest ticket in town? That is right! Batton down the hatches, hide the wives and kids folks, because here come THE RAPIDS!
. . . .
Ya.
Steve Goff is reporting that the Bulls season will open with two road games, followed by the unveiling of RB Arena against Colorado. To say that I am surprised by the lack of sexiness in that opener would be a bigger understatement than someone stating Kanye West is an idiot.
Look, I get that some games are big draws and putting them as the season opener is self defeating, since the opener should already be able to draw quite a crowd no matter the opposition. But this isn’t Major League Baseball and there isn’t a Yankees / Red Sox rivalry that draws that type of crowd. This is MLS, where a good attendance day in the tri state area means about 12,000 fans showing up. So why not stack the deck for the big unveiling?
If you want attention for the stadium, and a game that may attract some of your lost Metro-base, how about a battle with DC? All media eyes will be on RB Arena, so why not give the people a game worth their time to watch? Something with a bit of excitement, that will surely have people talking with just the action on the field?
This isn’t taking away from Colorado, because let’s face it – they have pwnd the Bulls the past two years. Regardless, the interest in this type of game will garner about as much excitement as a wet sock. MLS needs to go back and retool this immediately. The New York market has suffered enough marketing blunders to make Arizona look like a soccer hotbed. Let’s do this the right way; bring in a rivalry to start the season and the stadium off on the right foot.

Might as well have the home opener be against Union, in a battle for New Jersey bragging rights.

Isn’t this MLS’ call and not the team’s? More importantly, depending on how the rosters change this winter, maybe the Red Bulls will be (hopefully) improved and perhaps beat the Rapids? Nothing like success to kick off a new stadium regardless of opponent.
The rivalry games will bring in bigger crowds anyway, so why not use the stadium opener to bolster a matchup that isn’t a necessarily a big draw?

Why is the league not having us open the season at home, to show off the new digs?? Shouldn’t MLS show where the league is heading with the best stadium in the league?? Where is the love MLS?
