Remember back in the ‘04 Olympics, just over a year after our invasion and a few months after we captured Saddam, when the Iraqi football team had their first “shock and awe” performance? The Bush team immediately started airing ads using the Iraqi’s games, saying something along the lines of “This year, another new democracy is competing for national pride. Congratulations Iraq from the US Military.”
And the Iraqi team immediately asked them to stop airing the ads, because they didn’t approve of the use of their images and didn’t want to support the invasion of their country.

Mr Heston (love the name), I agree. There is a vast difference in the policies of our nations foreign affairs and that of the old USSR and Germany.

I retract the occupation word. You are completely right. The word congers images of that old guard and quite frankly, I wouldnt want it associated with the US.

But we are there. And the way they see it, is that we are, for lack of a better term, “Occupying” their space. Didnt mean malace by it, but it is definitely the wrong wording.

It was because of OIF and OEF that the Iraqis are allowed freedom of speech (even to engage in BDS) without the fear of Saddam’s brother who tortured the players after poor performances.

And I would be careful of the “occupy” tag in that we didn’t invade Iraq to slaughter citizens, bomb cities and wage war on an entire nation as the Soviet Union and Germany did to Poland back in 1939.

Again, this just rocks. And it’s in no way a middle finger to Bush’s face (although I wish it were- Bushie’s probably going to say they won because he liberated them), but just happiness all around.
