Jorge Rojas, Vinotinto Vet, and Chris Innes – Trialists

By: Dave Martinez | April 8th, 2008

Who says we need to pilfer Chicago for all our acquisitions?

Jorge Rojas, 30, a Venezuelan National veteran with 78 caps to his name, and the infamous Chris Innes, former captain of the bankrupt and dying Gretna FC of SPL, are now on trial with the Red Bulls.

I knew there was a reason I waited till the 13th hour to put up my season preview . . .

Jorge Rojas, whom, if I recall correctly (should google this), assisted and scored a goal in 2 games against Haiti recently, is a left back or left wing – two positions we have coveted for quite some time. If everything falls into order, Rojas would be our starting left winger, moving Dave Van Den Bergh to the CAM role, and Claudio Reyna could join Seth Stammler for a devastating twosome in front of our defenders.

Now that is a step up!

As for Innes, he is actually participating in team training as I write this. He was a major reason for Gretna’s spell in the SPL from ‘05 – ‘08, being largely credited for the ascension into the big leagues of SPL, and being largely credited for their demotion (but only because he was injured during certain spells).

Though Goldie and Leitch played admirably against the Cows, a person of Innes reputation and credentials should be afforded the opportunity to see what he can do. Sure, people downplay the talent or talent level of the SPL, but how many do the same to the MLS? Who know – Chris Innes may be that missing piece to the puzzle that will create the formidable backline we have been dreaming of.

IMAGINE . . .

With these signings (cross those fingers!), they will have a team that could take them to the Cup.

——–Reyna—Stammler——-
—-Innes—-Parke—-Freeman—
———-Conway—————

Appetizing no? DVB, as displayed Saturday, has no fear of taking a shot. He will be backed up by Magee. Reyna and Stammler will compliment a solid and experienced backline, which will make 1st year starter Jon Conways life much easier. The wing play, when healthy, will be some of the best in the league (backed by two solid rookies in Borman and Sassano). And with those starting three, we can have a bench with Goldthwaite, Leitch, Mendes and Brunner.

Not bad at all (especially in a league notorious for very little quality depth).

Looks like we may be flexing that allocation money-muscle after all!

Actually, I think that Reyna should stay in his CAM role, and Dave Van Den Bergh should stay on the wing.

I think Osorio’s got it right. We need VdB to shut down the wing, and Reyna, no longer shows the ferocity of an enforcer CDM role. However Reyna does show the intelligence of play, and subtlety of a good #10.

Joseph – I agree with Reyna’s ability to play the CAM – just my opinion that DVB may be better suited for the roll.

And if Reyna is suited to play CAM, he can definitely do the CDM position. Imagine him starting a play in our own 3rd, moving up field after raping some forward of the ball, dishing it to an awaiting Rojas on the wing? It would be nice.

Besides – though I love Stammy – I couldnt see him being any better at CDM than Reyna.

btw – Rojas rumor already being shot down. But lets see what happens.

    Dave,

According to the Venezuelan press the move has already been approved and he will play his last game with UA Maracaibo this Wednesday against Colo Colo in Copa Libertadores.

He should be reporting for training on Monday.

Im not sure what DVB really brings over Renya except perhaps a bit of speed and length. In truth Id prefer to see us give the Echeveery experiment some more run. this kid showed me a lot of hustle, heart and toughness the other day.

I could almost imagine Jozy and Echeveery up front with Angel and Renya behind them and then defenders staggered behind them. a 2-2-2-3 formation using Angel like Totti sorta and letting renya play between playmaker and defender.

    is that madness?

Gabriel – there are HUGE discrepencies -

First off, their press also said it was a “million dollar deal” – which us MLS fans know is impossible.

Second, Osorio has denied interest in Rojas – unless he changes his salary demands.

    My fingers are crossed pal.

    NLR – Not madness . . . but close ;)

Eche could get a try out at CAM ,but who knows what his passing prowess is. Remember, Francis Doe was a hell of a striker, but not much of a passer. Forwards tend to ball hog like that.

And as far as the TOTTI roll goes – if we can have that Chris Innes signing go through, and he can be as good as we hope – why not!

    btw – Catherine – Ide sign ya up as my #1 pick anyday . . . come on now . . .

Yea Gabe, I read the same article and the first sentence had me second guessing the entire thing.

But again – fingers crossed brother. Nothin more in the world that I want than a successful Bulls squad.

DM, I wasnt thinking of Eche as the CAM so much as Angel.

IMO Angel is one of the few players Ive seen in the MLS who can score and create for others in equal parts. He may not be totally comfortable in that role but hes head and shoulders above all our other players in skill and vision that perhaps its just inevitable that he play more like Blanco does for the unnamed team in Chi.

    Or again, perhaps Im nuts

Hey man – I dont think I can argue with ya on that one brother – Angel can pretty much do all of it – but I am sure he wants to stay up top.

But still. Interesting! Makes you think. . .
