Juan Pablo Angel Gives Williams Candidacy A Boost

By: Dave Martinez | October 26th, 2009

juan_pablo_angelJust in time for the election cycle, interim coach Richie Williams has received a huge endorsement for the vacant head coaching position. And this vote of confidence holds a lot of weight.

Team captain Juan Pablo Angel has clearly recognized the short term successes of the Williams era. Over the past eight games, the team has gone a respectable 3-2-2, tallying 11 goals for and 8 against in the process against competition that was deep into their playoff runs (well, except San Jose, but that is really splitting hairs). Compare that to the lowly Osorio, who managed a pitiful 2-16-4 record with the club this season, accumulating 16 goals for and 39 against. The most telling statistic may just be the goals for, as Williams nearly caught up to Osorio in less than half the games the former achieved.

Here is the post game quote:

“The last eight games have been very good, and he’s done what he has to do. He has turned the mentality around, and given us support and the results have been there for us. We’ll see; hopefully we make the right decision.”

Is Williams the answer? Or is it time to expand the teams managerial horizons beyond the string of managers that have been here since Red Bulls inception? Share your thoughts.

Give Williams a one year deal. Give him a full season to work with the team. No real harm in that. There is a better understanding of what he will bring to the team, than some new coach, who hasn’t worked with the team at all. If Richie can’t get the job done in a full season, than we can look for an outsider. But he obviously has the fan support, so even if he doesn’t do amazing in his first year, the fans won’t (probably) turn against him as we did with Osorio. And yeah, even if this team has a bunch of coaches, and it changes all the time, what really matters is trying and trying, until we get it right, and than we can keep that coach for an extended amount of time. But we shouldn’t just hold onto a coach just because we don’t want to have to look for a new one. So that’s why I say give Williams a one year deal, and a full season, and if he does well, we know we have our long term future, and sign him to a multi year deal.
