HOME

AWAY
Not much has changed. The away looks . . . ummm . . . louder. The Home is basically the same. But we have all been waiting for the 08 look - and here it is. Enjoy!

I think the roster deadlines are this week? Or is it something else? Something to do with theh cap?

From MLSnet.com :
An MLS player may be transferred or loaned at any time to a team outside the League. The registration windows - the dates between which MLS may request the transfer certificate of an international player are as follows:
January 15 - April 15 (Primary Window)
June 15 - August 15 (Secondary Window)What kind of roster freeze are we speaking? Becuz I also heard something about that . . .

Something about the cap deadline on March 1st or 3rd. I’m not sure what tho. Bluemeanies, where are you!?!

March 3rd all teams must be under salary cap compliance. I guess that means the Bulls still have money to play with since we’ve already cleared space (though rumors abound that DVB will be the next to go)
Ide hate to be the Galaxy right now . . .

Hrrrm, so they must be in compliance but they do not need to have the final roster. I guess it only applies to whoever they’ve officially signed so far?

Thats how I am taking it. Be under 2.2 by March 3rd. Finalize rosterss by the 15th. Good times with MLS regs!

Hey, thanks. Its great to be back. Im getting all excited again
By the way, from the NY Times today
“With the trade of Dema Kovalenko to Real Salt Lake and the waiving of Francis Doe, the Red Bulls are nearly $1 million under the league’s salary budget of $2.3 million. All M.L.S. clubs must submit their 28-man rosters by next Monday. …”http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/26/sports/soccer/26soccer.html?ref=soccer

I guess Im confused because we added D’oh late in the season last year if I remember correctly. So perhaps it is the deadline to have guaranteed contracts on the books or something.
Im pretty expert on the NBA’s contracts and rules but Im totally ignorant about the MLS. sadly. Ill learn though as it becomes relevant.
by the way my reply’s to threads always get marked as spam but then show up in the thread later on. Is there something Im doing wrong or can do to override the spam filter?

That has to be the highest number I have seen to date . . . but I have come to learn that the New York Times isnt the most reputable paper to get your info from anymore.
Maybe Jozy can cover the topic on his next NYT Blog!
Thanks for that hook up though. I missed that today for sure!

yeah, that’d leave us with a cool million to play with.
Any idea of how many of our 28 roster spots are committed?

I had a reader that must have gotten tired of the spam filter - Ken Metallides - guy always has great insight, but his stuff also gets spammed like crazy.
I just changed settings. lets see what happns with your next post!
Also - No one gets MLS rules. Hopefully, with time, and more individual ownership, we will have more clear cut guidelines.

Hey a comment made it without being spammed!
so anyhow, No draftees have been signed yet, so all we have signed are last years players. The rest are trialists and draft picks.

yeah Dave, I guess that loose understanding of rules and constant flux is part of the excitement and part of the frustration of a still young and ever growing sports league.

Couldnt have said it better . . . hopefully, as time goes on, and we gain cash and respectability, we might be able to understand our sports rules lol.
I always talk about the growth of soccer in Houston what with their stores and chains with Dynamo logos all over the place . . . we need that level. And NY needs to be a center of that growth.
. . . I just noticed how far off topic that thread went! From jerseys to the cap! Only MLS . . .

yeah, that kind of passion is harder in NYC though, dont you think, with 2 baseball teams, 2 football teams, hockey and basketball.
Regardless IMO the answer - and I hoped to see it this offseason - would be to target shamefully certain ethnic groups. How huge would the RBs be if we could pull Zeng Zhi in to NY and his 300 billion fans? LOL
actually instead of China we should target latin america where there is a huge ex-pat community here and where there is an identification with latin culture. Plus a real appreciation of their style of play.
Lord knows with how poorly the players are paid in Argentina and elsewhere in S America there should be interest in their coming here. Not to mention how much raw talent there is down south.

NoLayUp . . . pleasures always mine. I am leaving my office now as well, so its the last post till tommorrow.
Love what your saying about targeting the ethnic groups beyond S.America - I am Argentine WITH a Chinese girlfriend, so I COMPLETELY agree!

I’ve always liked the home jerseys since they became RBNY. And I’d buy one, if it weren’t for, you know, the “NY” part of the RBNY.

Hello Dave,
As always love you column,I am ready for another Red Bull season. As a die hard fan who goes to every game sorry do not understand why we keep looking for forwards. We really need midfields to feed Jozy and JPA. Also was never a Reyna fan and told everybody around that it was the biggest mistake that the organization made signing him to the designated slot. Lets look at DC who we all hate! Wow can we compete with them? That midfield could have been ours if Reyna had not been signed. Why is nobody going to South America like Columbia or Argentina or Mexico to sign international slots for two midfielders. By letting Watterus, Schoop,Dema, and Doe go why did we not gofor GOmez? I love the Red Bulls but they went out and got my favorite player ever who works his tail off JPA but no midfielders who even come close to working and suporting him which will evenutally annoy him. With Dema gone (stupid move) and rumors of DVB going who the hell is going to play midfield? Reyna will be hurt in two games and then what. I am glad we did not trade Dane Richards for Conde who we can get for less this summer. But come on new coach and no foreign midfields this is crazy brother! I want to compete for MLS Cup but any soccer fan can see that we did not improve one bit and if anything went backwards. We were a couple goals away from playing the Chicago Fire and who knows if JPA and Reyna stayed in the game we might have one. Not a bad year and WHY do we make wholesale changes every year. Sorry not taking it out on you. But Zack Thorton and Conway ! We need a better goalies but I hope I am wrong cannot take another bad year but compare to other teams we did not make much improvement. We needed to keep Mathis who can backup Reyna when he limps off the field within a couple of weeks. If they wanted to get a forward to replace Jozy who is leaving this summer they should have signed Alecko Eskandarian. Can you imagine he and JPA. Well sorry to go on and on but remember my email and hopefully I am wrong but the DC lineup scares the hell out of me.
Take Care my friend
Ken

Hey Ken! Long time no see!
btw, when you get spammed, just look on the page later in the day and it will appear. (I HATE that filter)
Ken, if I were to write a season preview TODAY, I would copy and paste what you wrote. And THAT is why I am waiting till the first or second week of March . . . the depth just is NOT there and there havent been any marketable improvements.
In a 3-5-2, an Etchevarry will do well enough as a CAM (I hope). But that still means Dane will have to get his crosses in order and that the left side has SOMEONE to cover what seems to be a departing DVB.
Again. I will hold my tongue till things are clearer in RBNYLand.
Great to have ya back Ken!

i just noticed we lost Vide in the expansion draft.
man that really bums me out.
im no athletic talent scout but Vide and D’oh were the players I was most excited about beyond the big 3 up front {JPA, JA, DR}
ps. we need midfield help - play-making and defensive

ABOUT THE KITS: that second jersey can’t be right, it’s got the old badge on it, the one with the two bulls and the “motion” lines/streaks behind it.

Mark - Its a prototype. The official ones are yet to be released. Good eye though, I thought the same thing.
