Game Footage! Red Bulls 2 – River Plate (Gallinas) 1
By: Dave Martinez | February 26th, 2009
I find the commentary in Argentina both amusing and infuriating. Whether I am rooting for my Albiceleste, or am taking in a Boca/River game, the announcers can’t help but be homers. What is a homer? That is the local announcer for *insert home team name here* that goes absolutely bananas when a goal is scored for them, or if a bad tackle is delivered against the local teams captain. That guy.
In Argentina, the snide comments are a dime a dozen. My favorite from watching TyC this morning?
Snide Commentator #1: So River looks good early on, even in the face of a very physical friendly, which was a friendly in name only . . .
Snide Commentator #2: Typical American football then?
Ugh.
But about the game! We have a highlight feature from TyC (recorded for you by me!) and a couple of things to report:
- Jorge Rojas was an early standout for the Bulls, once again showing great vision on the pass.
- Boyens and Richards netted the goals in this one.
- Juan Pietravallo drew a red card after accumulated yellows. I know, I know . . . . but I forgive him. Its River for goodness sake! They play DIRTY!
- The Bulls played a majority of reserves in the second half, and they still managed to take a lead!
- First half lineup: Cepero, Aklie Edwards, Kevin Goldthwaite, Carlos Mendes, Jeremy Hall, Khano Smith, Alberto Celedes, Jorge Rojas, Luke Sassano, Dane Richards and John Wolyniec.
- Second half lineup: Conway, Traynor, Boyens, Petke, Leitch, Pietravallo, Ubiparipovic, Zimmerman, Borman, Oduro, Mbuta.
- RBR is quickly becoming a fan favorite, and they are doing it again this week. Check out Red Bull Reader for a detailed breakdown of todays action, minute by minute (or as much as a blackberry will let you upload).
And here is the promised video. Enjoy!
PS: Who would have thought, a mere 10 years ago, that a preseason soccer game’s highlights would be available minutes from the end of the game, from a person who doesn’t even live in that said foreign country. Great stuff, DirectTV and Internets!!!!

Hey Dave. Thanks a lot for the post. I noticed that Kandji did not play. Is that correct? What were your observations about Celedes and Edwards?
Again, I could not thank you enough for keeping us RB fans informed.
Cheers

Kandji couldnt make the trip overseas due to visa issues. Celedes continues to impress, while I believe it was Edwards who netted an own goal. Not good.
Thanks for the kind words.

Good stuff Dave, I love the picture at the top the most, although I don’t share the RP hate lol.
Good run and cross by Khano for a good finish by Richards. That’s the way to do it. Perhaps keeping his crosses low will help Khano’s accuracy.
Edwards own goal was shameful. Really not that much pressure on the kid. He did all the hard work for River Plate. Time to cart this kid out and get a real LB.
Nice finish from Boyens. The clip shows a pretty physical friendly with Richards getting tossed at one point. Lol, good preparation for MLS then!

Very physical. That was the constant wording used all morning. The way they reported it, both teams were absolutely hammering each other out there. Nothing “friendly” about this preseason match for sure.

With two wins now, I bet the next friendly will be even more physical. How many more Argentine teams will put up with being embarrassed?

Nicolas – en cualquier momento que puedo hablar mal de River, me lo tomo loco!
Sin embargo, es pretemporada, y no importa un culo quien gano.
Igual – bien hecho contra las gallinas!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear the RedBulls are winning their preseason games and hopefully gaining new fans in Argentina.
I know how you feel about homers, they always make a big deal about their team’s play and then belittle the opposing team’s plays. I had to hear it through out the whole Copa Libertadores 2008 when Liga de Quito kept advancing.Posted from

Yeah I know. So what, it’s a preseason friendly. But it still good to win any game, especially against River, who hade some reserves but had a lot of experienced players also. Could I hate Gallardo anymore? Playing for River and DC. LOL I’m a Penarol fan so I identify more with Boca.
