Maybe This Mathis Thing Isn’t So Crazy After All
By: Martha | March 30th, 2007
Last night when the Clint-Mathis-is-coming-back news broke, all anyone could think about (apart from 2000 and the mohawk) is how much he was going to be costing RBNY, and how little he might produce. After all, the man earned $410,000 last year — only the seventh-highest salary in the whole damn league — and nobody wants to pay that for a fat guy who drinks a lot and doesn’t produce. (Not that Mathis could ever be that guy. Speaking purely hypothetically, you understand.) Additionally, if the Red Bulls had to pay all of that, it would pretty much eliminate any possibility of another DP coming in later this year which, when you’ve been hoping for Zidane and Angel, is a bit of a slap in the face.
Today, though, things are looking a bit brighter. According to a report in the Denver Post, as a result of the agreement made last year as part of the deal that brought him to Colorado, Salt Lake are still paying a large chunk of Mathis’ salary, understood to be about $300,000. In addition, since the Post story says the deal saves the Rapids “almost six figures,” RBNY are paying less than $100,000 of the remaining salary. So it sounds like we got a striker (and, overweight and unpredictable though he might be, Mathis is a body) with the potential for periodic greatness for $80,000-90,000 and either a fourth-round draft pick (according to the Post) or a partial allocation (according to Ives). Which, you know, sounds a lot better than the $400,000+ we though was being spent last night.
There are also reportedly conditions in the deal that will make it cost RBNY more if Mathis reaches certain games-played or goals-scored levels, but if the guy is actually producing, I don’t think you’ll hear much complaining about sending a little extra out West.
