Messi Out V. Red Bulls

By: Dave Martinez | July 31st, 2008

With FIFA’s laying of the smackdown on all teams preventing their under 23 stars to leave club competition for the Olympics, you can pretty much kiss a chance at seeing Messi for a second time this year goodbye.

Ah, what a blow to this Argie.

Reaction has been an overall disappointment (unless you live in Argentina). Now, fears from Barcelona about the potential loss of profit stemming from this decision are surfacing as well. Which begs the question - will a squad that still features Henry and Eto draw as well as it would without Messi in its lineup? How do you feel knowing Messi will be a no show, only 6 days until the game? Jipped? Who Cares? Let me know.

This shouldnt have been shocking to anyone.

I love how its another meaningless friendly 4 days before we play dc.

At this stage its time to just forfeit the rest of our games and just play international friendlies at giants stadium.

Red Bull New York vs LDU Quito?

Red Bull New York vs Red Bull Brazil (its real)

Red Bull New York vs 6 lions, 2 pandas, 2 silverbacks, and a shark

Anderson - the shark wouldnt work. But add another Panda, and we can compete.

You do have a point in all of that. It is just another meaningless friendly in the middle of a crucial part of our season. Totally agreed. Business wise (big picture), its a money maker for the team and recognition for a league that thirsts for good pub. Bringing in Barcelona accomplishes that and more. Its a reality we have to deal with every year.

The last quarter of the season does loom. So one has to wonder what kind of lineup Osorio would present before Barce.

is whats happening with us - playing a meaningless friendly before an ‘important game’ vs DC - and different than what Team Beckham has gone through with all his showcaseing? If there were other player on that team I bet they’d be annoyed too, but there are not. Only Beckham and his shirt allergy.

At 5PM on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Chelsea Waterside Park (23rd Street and 12th Avenue, across from Chelsea Piers), the most storied soccer club in history, FC Barcelona, will be playing in a 4-on-4 tournament to benefit Malaria No More.

This historic event will be free and open to the public and will last for approximately one hour. In their first U.S. appearance in over two years, the intimate environment will allow fans the potential to get autographs and photos with their favorite players.

Do not miss this opportunity to sit inches away from finest players in the world; Mexican national team captain, Rafael Márquez; 2008 UEFA Euro 2008 MVP, Xavi Hernandez; and of course the indisputably world-renowned, Thierry Henry. Featuring three players from the Spanish Euro 2008 championship team, this event offers the once in a lifetime opportunity to rub shoulders with the most decorated club in the sport.

We encourage people to get out early so they can:

    1) Get prime seats to see the stars of FC Barcelona in action, up-close and personal and hopefully get an autograph or picture with their favorite player

    2) Get some of the exciting prizes we will be giving away from 3:00 PM to 4:45 (FC Barcelona jerseys, soccer balls, tickets to the game, t-shirts, etc.)

I’m disappointed that Messi won’t be there, but as a Barcelona fan I’m still extremely excited to see the other players in action. Alves is the big draw for me, plus the possibility of seeing Yaya, on whom I have a HUGE mancrush…

And now the opportunity to go see/play with them at Chelsea? Hell yeah I’m down. I’d rather see Messi there, but what can you do?
