Metr-Olympians!
By: Dave Martinez | March 21st, 2008
Causing fits the entire night for the Maple Leaf back line, pressuring early and often, and drawing four free kicks near the box, two that were scorched in by Freddy Adu.
All in a days work for our Olympian - Jozy Altidore.
The US beat Canada 3-0 yesterday with a little help from some Red Bulls, past and present.
Jozy was big all night, drawing attention and potential scoring opportunities, even getting robbed point blank by a lucky, diving Mountie - of - a - goalkeeper.
Marvell Wynne was MARVELLOUS (I know thats been overused, but so what!). I definitely missed the speedy son of a gun as he was breaking necks, creating chances, and causing fits for the right side of the Canadian squad.
Of course, Gaven and Freeman also did their parts to get us to this point in previous games.
But the night truly belonged to Jozy. Its a beautiful thing to watch him continue to grow into a football threat out there. And it will be even better next season when we are cheering him on from across the Lake we call the Atlantic.
Olympics, here we come!

Jozy is the real deal - and yet when I read about this in the NY Times this morning the full article was devoted to Adu.
I guess the fact that he actually scored those two goals gives him the advantage.
Still, Id like a little hometown pride from the hometown paper.
is that so much to ask?
anyway, phew. we sorta squeaked into the Olympics on the final qualification game, huh?
And did I read correctly that Mexico didnt even make it in?

Yea Mexico was dumped hard. They needed to win by 5 GOALS to make it. They MADE 5 goals - but Haiti had 1.
Olympic dreams - dashed.
Adu was the story of last night, but to me, if it wasnt for Altidores mere presence in the box at all times, causing fits and drawing attentions, these shots would never have materialized. Had it been Charlie Davies and Adu up front, we may be looking at a different outcome.

Hey man, Canada has come A LOOOONG WAY. Toronto and Montreal (USL) have some really competitive and well followed teams.
And the talent has much improved. I would say Canada is at a level that the US team was in about 20 years ago (late 80’s, early 90’s).
You guys need more brains behind the operation. Do more to entice Canadians. But like i said, these are VERY positive steps.
