Mike Magee and the Galaxy; Slim Pickings
By: Dave Martinez | January 13th, 2009
As SBI has been reporting, Mike Magee is on Bruce Arena’s radar, and the closer we are getting to the SuperDraft, the more we are hearing about a potential move.
So that begs the question – Hey Los Angeles! Whatcha got?!
The answer, quite frankly, is not much.
The cupboard is dry, with the two best options in Donovan and Beckham overseas, overpaid and out of reach. What is left you may ask? Well, here are 5 options that may work on the East Coast. MAY work out . . . . and I am excluding Edson Buddle with the pending buyout of Mac Kandji just over the horizon. Don’t want to waste your time TOO much.
#1 – Sean Franklin – Defense : Franklin was the 2008 rookie of the year, and was frequently mentioned as a player who could live up to and beyond expectations. Lord knows the Bulls need some defensive depth. Franklin would be that and then some.
#2 – Eddie Lewis - Midfielder / Left Defense : A strong veteran presence to replace a strong veteran presence. The price tag would be an issue, but a left side featuring Lewis (at the right price tag aka – under 150k) and Rojas (both capable of playing any position on the left) can be a dangerous tandem. At 34, the price would be the tipping point. And he would be a wonderful 1-2 year stop gap.
#3 – Chris Klein – Defender / Midfielder : Again, a player with plenty of balls, but would the Bulls really need him? Not if Pietravallo can be what everyone expects him to be. And lets be honest – he wouldnt be an answer at defense, since he is more natural and comfortable at the mid.
#4 – Donovan Ricketts – Keeper : Maybe if Conway isn’t around? I think at this point, you are getting mine; LA has some barren cupboards.
#5 – Stefani Miglioranzi - Midfield : Unless they planned to use him as trade bait, it is fairly sad that the next desirable player is someone who they just picked up.
Pickings are thin folks. And I am a big fan of Mike Magee. His ability as a late game bench threat or a cheeky midfield general, though not all star status, does provide depth in a world where depth is a huge commodity. The Bulls already saved money with Van Den Bergh so would a further allocation be necessary? Because I honestly don’t see many options when considering what trade pieces the Galaxy have.
Share your thoughts – what does LA have that the Red Bulls want?!

Question #2: Why does the MLS only work with trades. Why can’t we transfer Mike Magee for cash then use that with the savings from the DVB deal to buy a midfielder?

Big Mac is signed.
Magee for Mike Randolph.

I trust in JCO to see the big picture, and find the best option in the pickings, if we have to lose Double M. Maybe we get lucky, and do a reverse Metro…where a guy comes to us in NY and does amazing, lol!

Have to agree with you Dave that Franklin looks the best of the bunch. Considering how thin we are defensively he could provide some good cover and maybe blossom into a good defender. I know he becomes a good player in Football manager lol.
Also “Shut up, Magee!” Be Champions!

Chris – I think he means 0a buyout of his loan which makes him a bull. January transfer is here too so suspect buying after the superdraft

Ives is reporting that it is Magee for a 2nd round pick. Absolutely terrible, yet typical Metro.
