Mmm … Keepers with Bad Hair
By: Martha | January 29th, 2007
As befits the team that employed Tony Meola during the worst of his bad (though he would have said “hot,” because he’s always been deluded that way) hair days, the Red Bulls today completed the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus* a man who has seriously bad hair in his past.
Though the official press release refers to Waterreus as a national team keeper, the fact is that he’s only ever played in friendlies (one of them a win over the US — go Ronald!), and hasn’t been picked since Euro 2004. That said, even though it ended more than two years ago, his time on the nation team means that he WILL count as a senior international on the RBNY roster. (Is that categorization in place forever, once a guy makes his national team, or does it disappear if he isn’t called up again after a certain number of years. Anyone?) International fringe status aside, Waterreus did have a couple great years with Rangers before leaving this year to join AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch league. So far he’s played in five of AZ’s 22 games, winning only once. He’s also 36 years old, which even for a keeper isn’t young.
Mocking aside, however, from what I can gather the transfer is a free, and it’s certainly worth bringing someone in to replace or at least push Conway. Plus, if we can get him to grow his hair back out, new guy could be a truly magnificent taunting target for fans of the opposition. Does “Waterreus” rhyme with “mullet?”
*That’s him at the bottom of the picture, in the lovely brown sweater.

“The Magic Mullet.” Giggle. MLS needs this kind of color!
And as far as I can tell, once an International, always an International. One friendly and it’s as much a part of you as your DNA.
