No 6-6-6 : Red Bulls 1 – San Jose 1

By: Dave Martinez | July 27th, 2008

The Red Bulls visited the supposed “worst team in the league” today, but if you pulled a footie fan off the street and asked who was the expansion team in the match, they would have a pretty tough time finding the right answer. San Jose has new life with Huckerby up top, and it showed today. If not for an Eric Denton own goal, San Jose would have been celebrating their first win in . . . well, in ages. Instead, the Bulls manage to squeek out yet another point on the road. And in the end, its better than a loss.

They fall short of the devils mark. Instead, they march back home with a 5-6-7 record to face rival DC.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jon Conway. When was the last time I wrote about the worries of Conway as our starter? Exactly. Conway has been a savior for the Bulls, stealing points in games the Bulls had no right to be in. Tonight, facing a ferocious San Jose attack (yes, I said that), he parryed balls out of trouble, and once again gave the Bulls a fighting chance.

TURNING POINT OF THE MATCH

The 4-5-1. Look. I know the idea is “steal points away.” But how about going for the win? Especially against a team that is supposedly the worst in the league. The 4-5-1 is the turning point of any match for the Bulls, what with their inability to score in it. Before things even got started, seeing Angel as a lone is a sure indicator that the offense will have to stall a tad. Rojas has shown his ability in the middle of the field. Maybe a game like this would have been a good time to continue the good vibes of the 3-5-2. But thats one humble guys opinion.

WHAT THE *##@*@!* MOMENT OF THE GAME

Eric Denton pulls a page from the James Reilly University of Own Goals and sends in a beauty over Joe Cannons head. Hysterical.

SPECIAL ED PLAYER OF THE MATCH

It pains me to say Mike Magee. He is a player I have always rooted for. But it is clear that his time away from the game has eaten away at his confidence and killer instincts. Twice in the 2nd half, Magee was presented with 1 v 1 situations against Joe Cannon. Both times, he weakly passed the ball off to the trailer. That is not the makings of a killer striker. Magee can do so much more, but his confidence needs to catch up to wear his skills are. Then you will have one hell of a player.
