Now What?!
By: Dave Martinez | June 1st, 2009
With a vital four game home stand completed, and only four out of a possible twelve points attained, the Red Bulls must be at a loss. No matter how hard they play, or what they do, they manage to find a way to defeat, no matter what. That, my friends, is the antithesis of a winner.
Major League Soccer teams have all upgraded the quality of its football the past 4-5 years. There aren’t that many easy wins anymore. As a matter of fact, the Eastern Conference basement dwelling Red Bulls are probably the closest thing to an easy win, San Jose and FC Dallas aside.
The idea that a team can afford to learn on the job is extinct. It seems the team never responded after the brutal beating it took against the Sounders to open the season. In fact, week after week, it just seems to get worse.
With some late, hopeful acquisitions made in preseason, the Bulls took a lot of the beginning of the season for granted. The idea must have been that with this deep a player pool, and experienced leaders at the helm, the chemistry would naturally solve itself. I guess not. It only lead to boneheaded plays, miscues, silly red cards, and lack of finish in the final fifteen. Outside of a lab, team chemistry takes a lot of time to develop. It is just the way it is. And the Bulls as presently constituted never had that chance to familiarize themselves with each other early on.
This years cruel schedule leads us to the next chunk of games; seven out of nine featured on the road. Believe me when I tell you this isn’t the position the Bulls wanted to be in. This is the same Red Bull team that has earned one point out of a possible 15 on the road this season.
One point.
Add onto this mess a busy international calender which would require the services of Alfredo Pacheco, Jorge Rojas and Andrew Boyens to national team duty. This would mean heavy time off of the regular season schedule, a conflict that the Bulls will be fighting tooth and nail to overcome.
So this begs the question of the post; Now What?! Where else can the team turn for answers? What more can be experimented with to conjure up some success? Can it be that a team that boasts a quality mix of current and former national team captains, a EPL quality striker, internationally capped players and hot, young prospects can not find success in MLS? Or are the murmurs of the fan base, asking for Osorio’s head the first place to point to when the team falls flat?
So many questions, no answers, and very little time left for a turnaround. What will the future hold for these Red Bulls?

I’ve been checking out other MLS teams and I found at they actually win games on the road! It must be possible for us too. We just have to set smaller targets. Like scoring a freaking goal. The 7-0-3 formation going forward does not work. God help us.

Not sure what our formation should be or which midfielders we should put in, but our problem is our midfield.. We keep giving long balls from defenders to forwards but there are barely any good passes from midfielders to forwards.. We need to get passes on the ground and find a midfield that will give us offense (and better crosses)..

No wins in 17 road matches. And it doesn’t look like that streak will end soon. I hope it does. But again, Angel had a GOLDEN opportunity in the first minute of the game to bag a goal..and he blew it. That was a huge miss. I think we’ll have to wait until a grass pitch and new stadium excites and motivates the players, and entices better players to join NY Red Bulls…who the hell wants to play at Giant Stadium on that pitch must be crazy. Figo, where are you?

Oh..and our central defenders aren’t that good and the outside guys haven’t adapted to playing in MLS or on that crappy home pitch. And Conway has not been the same since he stopped using steriods.

Oh…and why do they water down the pitch..it is the most stupid thing I have ever seen or heard of. A joke. Can you imagine in Europe what they think of soccer on artificial turfs that get watered down before each half. Think about it.

I am reading a lot about the Red Bulls lately.. and nowbody say anything about the terrible performance of Conway in the past games. Ok he has a couple of good saves. But He is terrible… he stands up on the goal line and he doesnt move. the first two colorado goals were all conway’s fault, ok Pacheco miss the mark but a those were goalkeepers balls.
The problem is the Coach..
the position of the players agains colorado was terrible.
then subs. Pacheco out – Sassano In… the team was losing and Osorio put in a defensive player??? I still tried to figure it out.. thats minute 57.
minute 65 . borman IN.. Ubi out… he wait 65 minutes to realize that UBI was playing a terrible game.
and the worst of all.. HE WAIT TILL MINUTE 86 to PUT IN WOLY.. It looks like losing 3-1 for him was bad.. but losing 3-2 was ok. was closed!!
We need a good manager, Osorio is not a good coach, I hate seeing him on the sideline walking or getting on his knees.. come on dude.. you do not know anything about football…Posted from

I feel its time for the Red Bulls to start looking at the 2010 season and give some of the younger players a chance. Osorio clearly likes juggling the line up so why not try Zimmerman and Stammler in the middle and give celades the play maker role just behind the strikers. Plus please sign Extantus and Duka asap. So we can give those a try and find out before the 2010 season starts if they are good enough or not…

How can we get any team chemistry when Osorio is always making changes? And it’s not like he makes minor adjustments, he completely changes players positioning. I think it’s time that the front office sees him out the door. As I’ve said on here before, Osorio has a losing record since joining the team. How much more do we have to lose before we get a coach who knows how to win? But I know it’s not completely his fault, considering the players know how to pass as well as third graders. And have TERRIBLE first touches. And that isn’t just because of the turf. They have crappy ball handling skills home and away. We need a coach who gets back to basics, and keeps it simple, and just wins.

I see 2 major problems with this team and they are both resolved the same way – perhaps.
1}Our team is mostly playing well except that several times a match they completely brain fart and give a wide open unmarked opportunity to the opposing teams best player. Thats how 90% of the goals against happen. Ive noticed that its usually Pacheco losing his man.
2}Our midfield is outmatched and lacks aggressiveness. We never play a ball forward with confidence and when we do its usually a hail mary type lob forward to Kandji or Richards to go one on one. Not acceptable. We need to pass the ball with purpose and precision and create opportunities for Angel, Kandji and co to score. We have the finishers, just not the playmakers. Boy oh boy do we miss Van Der Bergh, as I predicted.
My solution is simple. Move Pacheco out of the defense and into the midfield. Hes about the only one who looks to push the ball anyway and hes seemingly distracted in defense by the potential for a counter ever now and again. He wants to play forward, let him.
Id start Mendes, Goldthwaite {whos been great}, Boynes and Borman in the back.
Id start Rojas, Celades {whos looked very good too} and Pacheco in the midfield.
Id start Angel,Kandji and Richards up front.Alternately Id bring Richards off the bench and start Hall, whos looked good.
We need to be more aggressive playing the ball forward and more stable in defense.
for starters.
But I think those moves would be a major help.
With Rojas, Pacheco and Boynes out of the roster and Red-card Johnson, who Ive liked, gone, we are typically shorthanded.
But that shouldnt change out strategy. It should be the same. Play the ball forward, control possession, stick to your markers on D especially the opposing teams main man!!!!

Thank you, Larry and Karlomabo. I thought I was the only one who noticed that Conway is no more. He’s lethargic, slow and not what we need as our last line of defense. Please bring Danny back. I like that kid. He’s a rookie but he’s shown great desire and lots of potential. He needs to be a starter. He will only get better over time.

we’re screwed, dudes. the season is kaput. osorio has to go, and in his absence, i think the team could stop disgracing itself with this line-up:
—–angel—kandji
rojas—celades—mbuta/richards?
——-stammler
borman-goldie-petke-hall
——–conway
with pacheco, pietravallo, and smith as busts and with johnson hurt, this is what we’ve got. we really don’t have anyone who can pass at RM, though. ubi is not the answer.
this is a time when fans accept defeat and cheer the lads on anyway. looking forward to next season in the new arena.Posted from

next season….lets get some brasilians and portuguese into the newark area for next season….Angel..if you’re hurt, wait until next year, get healthy. That turf is killing his knees..poor sap. With only 7,000 showing up anyway..lets play the rest of the games at some local park with grass….Biggest NYRB needs: 1 more central mid, 2 inside defenders, keep Kandji up top all the time. Let Angel come back for the ball.
