Observations Of Failure: Chicago 1 - New York 0
By: Dave Martinez | September 8th, 2008
I am doing this weeks post game a bit differently. To those who love the usual format, the hero was Angel, who kept trucking and creating the entire game despite showing an enormous amount of disappointment and angst in relation to the non existent attack.
As for the other three catagories, Diego Jimenez scores an “Offside Hat Trick.” He was involved in the matches turning point, with that gift goal to the scary Stephen King (this is his most horrific tale to date!). That was also the “WHAT THE !$*@ MOMENT OF THE MATCH.” And who better to wear this weeks Special Ed Dunce cap?
But some observations on the game may expound my points best.
#1 - I am not blaming Jon Conway for that goal, because it was all Jimenez fault. But that leap Conway took, vertically and to the left, had to be the best impression of a cat falling 25 stories. Did anyone else chuckle at the sight? Why he didnt throw his body on a more horizontal plain to cover more area and block the low OR high incoming shot is beyond me.
#2 - Was it the loss of Jorge Rojas that made our midfield sputter so badly? Or are we discounting the contributions of Mike Magee, who has been as positive an offensive force as any Red Bull during this stretch run? Magee has been every bit the revelation for Metro scoring as Rojas, in my humble opinion. The loss of BOTH Red Bull standouts are what made way for that big goose egg left in Chicago.
#3 - Gabe Cichero needs more game time. He looked lost - like watching a pee wee soccer game, and seeing that one kid who cant tell his left from his right struggling to find his position on the field. I do feel his contributions (even his hot headedness) can play a positive effect for the team, but the time off with the red clearly effected his judgment out there.
#4 - I still love Diego Jimenez. He is a young noob. And like any young noob, even one with his trememdous potential, he is bound to make a mistake. Jimenez has filled in so well the past few weeks, saving the team from a goal just yesterday before gifting another. Mistakes will happen. But it doesnt take away from the impression he has already made with the Bulls.
My take? Freeman and Parke were out of position. Jimenez comes in from left back to the right middle to help them cover up. He clears to where he should have been, and King scores.
#5 - Pietravallo and Freeman were exceptionally bad. Pietra looked uninspired, Freeman looked out of place. I understand Hunter - he hasnt played in forever. But Pietra was inexplicable to me.
#6 - I love Wolyniec off the bench. Any other function? Ixnay. (also, Max Bretos, if you are reading - and you just might be! - its pronounced WALL UH NICK, not WOL KNEE ACK. It makes Red Bulls fans ears bleed everywhere!)
#7 - Even with the teams progression and growth, Angel still looks and reacts with vast disappointment if the team isnt scoring. Either he is sick of the situation here, or he truly is a leader, in the Paul O’Neill / Yankees mold, who wears his heart on his sleeve in good and bad times. Considering the recent success of the team, I am going for the latter.
So did you see the game the way I did? Add your observations . . .

Cichero really made a lot of mistakes, and was fortunate to not give up a goal. On the other hand Jiminez had a very solid game, and his 1 mistake led to a goal.
I’d rather see Cichero sit on the bench for the rest of the season & chalk it up a mistake signing.
but I’m pretty ruthless.

DAMN TOMMY! Harshness!
Yea Cichero was pretty damn horrendous. But not bench forever horrendous. Personally, I think the bite of having two guys in Cichero and Pietra that are willing to cut someones knees in half plays well against the rest of the league with time. i am willing to give Gabe more opportunities.

Also I”m gonna have to disagree with you on Pietravallo :]
Uninspired, maybe, but he definitely seems more composed than most of the players on the pitch. He kind of reminds me of our little own Gatusso. IMO he’s definitely one of the better DM’s in the MLS at the moment. *SHRUG*

Im gonna agree with you on most points Dave, but not on all.
Jimenez gets a pass from me too as a talented young player who is far from alone this season in dropping his pants at the wrong time.
COnway is as much a stud this season as Angel even. I think I heard them say he tied the longest streak or has the 2nd longest streak of clean sheets after this recent stretch?
Angel is still super stud but yes, the pain on his face in every one of these games where he is left to have to create magic just to get a reasonable opportunity does not bode well for him staying in NY
I disagree with Magee getting so much credit. As nice as its been to get goals from the guy the loss of him wasnt so noticable IMO as the total lack of playmaking int he midfield.
I remain unmoved by Rojas. I dont think hes the playmaker we need but I do remain optimistic that he can become it. I hope.
Pietravallo may not have had his best game but hes not responsible for playmaking but play disrupting. Ball winning and hell raising are great but you need scoring to give it a chance. I dont hold him in any way responsible for our shit midfield against CHI
Poor Osario. He deserved better

Tommy - Hey, I AGREE with Pietra. But this ONE game, he looked bad. Out of it. But we agree to disagree!
NLR - Rojas is brilliant, and will just have to show us how brilliant as time goes on! And yes, I may be overselling Magee, but I really like the kid. I am hoping he is back in contention soon. And Pietra, again, is a beast, and he is destroying the other teams Offense, but this game, he couldnt do what makes him so special - disrupt AND throw the open pass!
I do have to emphasis as well - the team is still on the right track. So heads up! RSL is next for a beating!

yes, right track for sure! No doubt. Im very proud of this squad. Making a major run and losing a very losable game but without it being an embarrassment as it had been most of the season.
I remain unconvinced about Rojas’ brilliance though. I cant wait to be proven wrong.

Rojas not being in showed bad, but your right about JPA he flat out looks pissed and quite frankly I like it.
As for Max Bretos, if in fact he is reading, there more may be more we need to say to him…
