POLL: FC New York Barcelona (UPDATE!)

By: Dave Martinez | August 28th, 2009

You have all heard the rumors by now, so lets hear it!

How do you feel about Barcelona *POSSIBLY* buying the New York Franchise?

How Do You Feel About The Rumors That Barcelona Is Looking Into Buying The Red Bulls?(polls)

***** UPDATE *****

Sorry for giving no background on this, as I thought it was already old news. Various sources have been saying, behind the scenes, that FC Barcelona is looking into buying the New York Red Bulls from the current Austrian owners. Much like the rumors from earlier in the season, they suggest that Red Bull would retain the ownership of the stadium, and the team itself would be what is sold.

You can read a bit about it here and here.

And I am sorry for not covering it on these pages till today. It has been a LONG week (TRUST me).

I haven’t heard these rumors either, but honestly I would rather have Barcelona create a brand new team that actually plays somewhere in New York State than just rebranding that tainted New Jersey team.

The two most important conditions is that the team and its stadium be situated within the NYC. Not Jersey. Not Long Island. If there is anything that needs to be learned from the successes in Seattle and Toronto is that the venue has to be easily accessible to the fans.

Everywhere else in the world, the approach to the stadium with thousands of other fans helps build up the atmosphere that carries through the games. Nothing beats walking down the streets towards the stadium chanting your team’s songs and getting passers-by involved, or getting and giving the finger to opposite fans.

    Cheers

Pico, that’s the problem with Barcelona just buying the Red Bulls. They have that stadium opening up next year, so that franchise is stuck is Jersey for the next twenty years or so. It would be better if they buy that USL team that’s supposed to start soon and bring them up to the MLS.

    Thanks for the update Dave.

But in response to the others I have this to say: Eff that.

The Harrison location is just as good as any location “in the city”…oh yeah stashing them out in Queens will be great. Taking the PATH train to the game will be easier for NYC and NJ fans. There is a separate issue of upstate NY needing a team (Buffalo? Rochester?). But for the metro area NJ arenas for “NY” teams will continue to work.

I’d welcome a new branding of the team as well (though Barca NY would not work), I’ve never really approved of the idea that a brand can name a team after itself (there are a bunch of these in Wales I believe).
I’d like to see this team become FCNY (or NJ), but now I’ve gotten my hopes up.

I agree that NY teams need to be in NY. Its only right. Of course NJ people dont feel that way but what can you expect? They are from NJ!

The new red bull arena is going to be just as excessable as for those people in nyc or long island, as a stadium in nyc would be for people in nj or long island. There are going to be more than enough ways to reach the stadium from the city.
I would be for barcelona taking over as long as barcelona doesn’t name the team fc barcelona ny or something stupid like that. Barcelona buying this team would mean that competent soccer minds are in charge of this team and i’m all for that.

Oh and wouldn’t the Barca ownership be the perfect pipeline for Henry to be brought over?

I’m all for it if they change the name to anything that doesn’t contain the words “Red Bulls” or “Barcelona.”

Deadbulls looked a bit lively. Missed several chances on first half and deserved to win. Surprised to see less people at the stadium than last time around. Weather was great, however.

Again, what’s up with the rumors that Barca maybe interested in buying them?

From what I understand it’s not Brcelona that is interested. It’s a Bolivian business man that has ties to Barcelona and owns a team in Bolivia. He was at the head of trying to bring a team to Miami that just fell through.
