POLL: Figo, Figo, Figo

By: Dave Martinez | July 21st, 2009

The Red Bull season landscape is barren of positivity. The only area that can bring promise and hope for 2009 is the CONCACAF Champions League, and even that seems to be a long shot if recent performance is any indicator. More and more, as weeks become months, Bulls fans only have the end of the season to look forward to. And it seems that Red Bull is preparing likewise.

RBR just posted what I believe is a simple, yet effective and positive method for the team to pick up its’ fanbase in Harrison; a featured spot on Radio America 1700 AM, a Portuguese radio station based out of the Ironbound section in Newark. This, along with recent efforts participating in the Portuguese day parade, represent a concerted effort by the team to afix it’s roots into the community.

And these little steps are fine. But you know what I would like to see?

Luis Figo.

The man is beloved in the ‘guese community, and would be an immediate draw. Like Beckham, Figo’s name in this particular region would bring in both the casual person and hardcore fan to Red Bull Arena. Unlike Beckham, Figo would be more likely to bring in a more football savvy fan to the game, which in turn makes the prospects of retaining said fans after his departure a better bet (as long as the team can show some winning spirit and a reason for the fans to return). Beckham, for all his hoopla and star power, best works for bringing in Hollywood star gazers rather than football aficionados. Figo actually represents a unique opportunity to bring a target audience to the stadium that are more likely than not inclined to support the local football team.

And besides the business side of things, he can still be an effective footballer, immediately able to solidify the midfield for 2010 and schooling the youngsters on how to get it done as well.

Now, is he DP worthy? Probably not. But a contract constructed like Schelotto’s first year would be more than sufficient compensation for him to consider.

The retired legend will be 37, going on 38 next season. Would you be willing to take this calculated risk? The vote is yours:

I've been saying for years now that they should bring in Figo. Makes perfect sense with the location of Red Bull Arena being in a heavily Portuguese populated area, even if it's just for one season.

Bringing in a Portuguese player is not a bad idea at all. But not Figo. The last thing this club and league need is another old star. I know this is a painful season but we need a long term plan. We need a good solid team that plays attractive attacking football. I don't care about big names. I just want to watch a good quality game in NYC.

    I'll wait for Henry...

Id be more than happy with a player like Figo, even if hes not worth the kind of money we'd have to give him

Im so sick of watching this team choke in the midfield.

And I cant wait until Rojas is gone. that guy has never done a damn thing worth his starting position let alone his contract.

Is there any player more skilled than him on our team who looks more useless? Any player in the league who is supposed to be a leader and cant even figure out his own position? Is he a playmaker or a defensive mid? Neither IMO because he does neither.

Perhaps Rojas was brought in to cough up the ball and give bad fouls. In that case hes doing great!
  • Do not want this Judas on our team.

Pandering never works. I would think the sophisticated Portugese soccer fans would know they are being ethnically pandered to by a move like that. He is old and past it, he wouldn't last long in MLS at his age.

That said, it would be RB's MO to do this because since they have no fans they need to hook as many people as they can find.
  • I doubt Veron, after being offer millions by DC, would even consider RBNY. Man would I be happy with that though!

We need a play maker. too bad veron is out of our league.
