POLL: Figo, Figo, Figo
By: Dave Martinez | July 21st, 2009
The Red Bull season landscape is barren of positivity. The only area that can bring promise and hope for 2009 is the CONCACAF Champions League, and even that seems to be a long shot if recent performance is any indicator. More and more, as weeks become months, Bulls fans only have the end of the season to look forward to. And it seems that Red Bull is preparing likewise.
RBR just posted what I believe is a simple, yet effective and positive method for the team to pick up its’ fanbase in Harrison; a featured spot on Radio America 1700 AM, a Portuguese radio station based out of the Ironbound section in Newark. This, along with recent efforts participating in the Portuguese day parade, represent a concerted effort by the team to afix it’s roots into the community.
And these little steps are fine. But you know what I would like to see?
Luis Figo.
The man is beloved in the ‘guese community, and would be an immediate draw. Like Beckham, Figo’s name in this particular region would bring in both the casual person and hardcore fan to Red Bull Arena. Unlike Beckham, Figo would be more likely to bring in a more football savvy fan to the game, which in turn makes the prospects of retaining said fans after his departure a better bet (as long as the team can show some winning spirit and a reason for the fans to return). Beckham, for all his hoopla and star power, best works for bringing in Hollywood star gazers rather than football aficionados. Figo actually represents a unique opportunity to bring a target audience to the stadium that are more likely than not inclined to support the local football team.
And besides the business side of things, he can still be an effective footballer, immediately able to solidify the midfield for 2010 and schooling the youngsters on how to get it done as well.
Now, is he DP worthy? Probably not. But a contract constructed like Schelotto’s first year would be more than sufficient compensation for him to consider.
The retired legend will be 37, going on 38 next season. Would you be willing to take this calculated risk? The vote is yours:
