REPORTS: RBNY Picks Up Carl Robinson
By: Dave Martinez | March 6th, 2010
As reported by several outlets, and first by the 3-4-3 FC blog, Carl Robinson is heading New Yorks way for undisclosed 2011 draft picks. Robinson, 33, has been a central figure in Toronto FC since it’s inception, though he has never been able to lead his team to the playoffs in that time frame. He was voted team MVP twice and is well known for his ability to hold and distribute the ball from the back.
Robinson has been hampered with injuries, which along with his 300k guaranteed contract, makes many skeptical as to what the Bulls are looking for in the rugged midfielder. But according to 3-4-3, they have managed to get TFC to absorb up to 200k of that number, which would be a major budgetary coup for a veteran like him.
It will be interesting to see how Backe plans to use the Welsh international in an already crowded midfield. Certainly, players like Sinisa Ubiparipovic, Tony Tchani and Seth Stammler must be taking notice. Backe revealed to the Post his desire to employ two defensive midfielders to fortify the back line in a flat 4-4-2. A destroyer combo of Stammler and Robinson would work well for the team, though it would put a question mark as to where Lindpere would line up, and when Tchani would ever see pitch time. Backe did say the formation could go diamond midfield in the attack, which may suggest the Estonian could play from the left wing and then transition centrally. Meanwhile, the rookie could be riding the pine, but that is all conjecture.
Either way, it is nice to see the Bulls have some options in the midfield for a change.
Well, what do you think my people? Is Carl Robinson the answer to backfield distribution, or a quick and potentially cheap price to pay for a season long veteran band aid? Should some players get their resumes ready? Share your thoughts after the jump.
