POLL: The Three DP Effect

By: Dave Martinez | August 3rd, 2010

marquezintroductionToday’s announcement of the acquisition of Rafael Marquez completes the trifecta of Designated Players for the Red Bulls franchise; a first in Major League Soccer history.

Thierry Henry and Juan Pablo Angel have already demonstrated the kind of headaches they may cause teams throughout the league with their creativity, experience and striking prowess. Rafael Marquez will undoubtedly be expected to provide the calming distribution this team has lacked in the midfield all season. And the idea of all three players taking the pitch simultaneously for the Red Bulls have many seeing Championship trophies on the horizon.

But is it too soon?

I am handing the say to you: Just how far will Red Bull make it this season with the addition of their third designated player? Have your vote, and let the debate begin below!

I say we stay high conference table and trade that Western conference championship banner for an Easter one but if anything we need a new keeper i hate greg sutton and bouna is too unpredictable and no confidence on clearing a ball.

I think RB has to win Sunday. Though Toronto is not a good road team, RB could lose Marquez, Lindpere, I am sure Bouna too and hmmmm..who else gets called up to the national teams for FIFA August 11 play. Who gets called up for Toronto???

It looks like (hopefully) that RBNY can qualify for Concacaf Champions League. I hate Super Liga. Waste of sperm. But first thing is the three games next week, Sunday, Wednesday and finally Saturday. Backe has a lot of strategizing with personnel usage. I would like Rafa to do at least 60 to 70 Sunday. I think Backe may use Mac to substitute in one of the games for JPA and/or Henry. I cannot see all three DP's going all 90 minutes in all 3 games in a 7 day stretch in the middle of the summer, suicide.

I think Big Mac and Ream are going to gain the most from having these three DPs. Kandji is going to play the understudy to Henry, while still getting a lot of time in the first 11 with TH14. Ream will continue to start, but he will be defending against the best striker tandem in the league (ever) on a daily basis. He (and Tchani) will also have Marquez to learn from. With the right balance of "nurturing" and game play, these two or three young players will elevate their game at a rapid level.

God, I want NY to tear it up in the Champions League...

If Juan Pablo, Thierry, and Rafa stay healthy they should be able to win it all.

I say a late playoff run, because their starting point was so low(last in league last season). Even though they have improved throughout the season, and in this transfer window, I still think they lack the depth of a COLUMBUS CREWE, and all the other teams have gotten better as well.

Go get your popcorn...Sunday night v. Chicago can't come fast enough.
  • Anything less than an MLS Cup would be a complete failure.

They have everything we as fans said they needed. Now, it's time (for us anyway) to just sit back and watch.
  • Not a Mexico fan, not a NYRB fan, but I like it and don't get the hate that is about to come...besides the fact that they went from being not too good to a legit contender.

    I don't think I've ever seen a team's identity change this much mid-season.
