POSTGAME: Make that Eleven - Red Bulls 1 - 1 New England
By: Dave Martinez | April 19th, 2008
A tale of two halves is an expression that has probably been used and abused more than my favorite pair of socks. But how else can you describe tonites debacle?
The first half was dynamic, the second, sporadic. And as a result, the Bulls extend their winless streak to 11 games against The Revs.
To be fair though, I would have to blame alot of that on the referees who were clearly seeing a game no one else saw. There were so many calls against the Red Bulls that it became an absurdity. I am sure College kids everywhere were inventing their own “Ricardo Salazar Ridiculous call, take a shot” drinking game. Horrendous. Truly.
And granted, Angel reaggravated his injury and Reynas knee was inflammed.
But that is making excuses. And I am not one for it. No matter how valid . . . the fact remains the team had a long advantage and was not able to capitalize.
Osorio utilized a 4-4-2 that quickly became a 3-5-2 on the offensive, with an attacking Chris Leitch manning the right lines from post to post. And it worked fairly effective. As a matter of fact, it was probably overwhelming an under prepared Revolution squad.
But halftime came, Nichols made his strategic changes, and New England came out better prepared. A Castro red card for kicking Goldthwaite, and the Revolution began to bunker down with defensive changes and strategy. The Bulls did some knocking towards the end of the game, led by Jon Wolyniec and Altidore, to no avail.
Here are this weeks winners:
MAN OF THE MATCH
Matt Reis was a beast. Period. End of discussion. How many times did he rob the Bulls tonite? Come now. He was a main reason for this valuable road point that they did not deserve by any means. Matt Reis should get an award for tonites performance. Way to keep you head with the barrages you faced.
On the converse side, if I had to pick a Bull, Jozy Altidore. Last week, Jozy received so much blame for not producing in the absence of Juan Pablo Angel. And throughout the second half, though he was being directly targeted, he did create chances whenever he could. But you have to admire the way Jozy made Igwe look ridiculous. That one will be in highlights for a while. Beautiful goal.
TURNING POINT OF THE MATCH
The red card that sent Castro off. And for all the wrong reasons. After that well deserved card, kicking Goldthwaite for no reason, the team played a more laid back style, awaiting opportunity. When they finally attacked, they faced a New England squad in excellent form, unchallenged and fresh. The last minute urgency, though effective to an extent, did not produce any goals or success. Wolyniec nearly pulled off some heroics, as did Altidore, and they were both rather fairly robbed. Nevertheless, its imperative this team develop more of a killer instinct if they wish to advance in this years race to the Cup.
WHAT THE?! MOMENT OF THE MATCH
That Jozy Altidore neck krackin’ of Igwe. Wow. He turned him inside out, and beat Reis to the near corner. He should send that goal overseas to every major club, with a simple note attached - “Almost Available . . . “
SPECIAL ED PLAYER OF THE MATCH
This week is special. Very special. For one Man. And his friends.
Ricardo Salazar. And his crew.
Why a ref should blow a game single handedly is beyond me. And the amount of errors were too numerous to recount. I was just disgusted by the lack of clarity in tonites calls. A kick just outside the box, for what?! That was gift wrapped for New England. Period.
And just to let everyone know, Carlos Mendes came back from exile tonite and played a productive game. He looked incredibley tired afterwards, but I am sure he gave a little extra tonite. Someone is always watching.
Take care y’all.

the more I watch this team the more obvious it is to me that as goes Angel so goes the bulls.
when he touches the ball we are in good shape, when others do its a fiasco.
can anyone other than he control a possession? Altidore somewhat, renya somewhat, it seems like Borman and VDB can too. But man, we need someone who can control and make passes and Angel seems to me the only one close to capable.

Reyna looked great first half.
Second half - POOF - he kinda disappeared, but that can be chalked up to that Giant Stadium turf messing with his knees (I was in the practice bubble yesterday - and I couldnt believe how fake the grass was)
Angel is awesome in possesion. Jozy can make things happen in possesion when he has some space - then again, he did crack people 2 at a time at points yesterday.
Whats missing is that killer instinct - to put the dagger through the heart as they lie there awaiting death. Once we get that going more often, you will see a killer team out there.

Hello Dave,
Went to the first two games and watched the third. I think of course the RB goes as far as JPA, but cannot understand why everyone is saying we need more defense and a defvensive midfielder. The problem as I see it is we need a good playmaking midfielder to distribute to JPA and Jozy which has been the case for the last few years. No team can win as you see in the league without it. I am sorry but am I big Amado Guevara fan and watched him play and he looks great distributing in their 2 victories. I think for the money he wanted and no one else available it is STUPID for the organization to not have anyone like him. Leitch SUCKS, Borman cannot control the ball and stamler in the middle is not the answer. We must go to south american and get two aggressive playmaker who can feed and attack like Joseph of New England. We won the first game and no goals given up and only gave up a fluke to New England of course Leitch was at fault (as usual) he SUCKS. I hope we can find some new midfields soon. Reyna is too old.

Hey Ken -
Yea, Ive been to the first couple of games as well.
I thought Reyna looked great the first half. The second half he was a ghost.
And I am a HUGE Guevara supporter. And to not get a person of his caliber who wanted to return is perplexing. He would have been the solution to our season.
Good to see ya on Ken. Sorry for the spam filters - they are ridiculous. But always check back and I will approve your comments.
I am missing the next game, but will be there for KC. We have a long way to go brother . . .

anyway i cant wait to hear what the answer is.
I agree a playmaking midfielder is crucial.
But the reason Im always harping on defense is because my personal philosophy demands it. I just believe that in every sport defense makes champions. Conway has been solid but we seem to lack speed in the defensive line, though clearly that wasnt our problem yesterday.
Its notable that the only goal we conceded was via set play and off some bad coaching {8 in the line}
also notable that the only goal we achieved was vis pure one man play by Joze.
I repeat that I believe Angel has to play a “totti-type” of role for us. He can attack and be set up constantly as hes clearly the best and most aggressive striker we have. However he should also drop back some and look to set up others since no one on our team and almost no one in MLS seems comparable to his football IQ, playmaking ability and natural instincts.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate everything Reyna has done, but Shalrie and Jeff own the defensive end of the midfield for the Revs when they line-up against him. It’s a tough match-up for the guy. Jozy was awesome - can’t ask more from the him. As for the red card… I don’t know. I thought it was a yellow at best. For what it’s worth, I think the Revs played just as well without Castro.

Backseat.
What can I say. Yes. The Revs were super impressive with their effort. But my god does it stink to say it lol . . .

NLR - two cents always accepted and admired.
The more you say it, and the lesser our options, the more it should be one. A Totti role may suit him.
btw - saw him post game and he had a bad limp. Noticable.
We do agree on one thing - defense does build champs. Even when I am playing video games, I emphasis D. Always. But the argument can be made Midfield is more important. So who knows. But our team as currently constructed needs a few tweeks before we are a consistent contenders.
Great article on BAS - they quote Osorio ripping into Leitch for the final tying goal. Check it - http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/article.php?article_id=13755

good article. Honestly I like that the coach demands quality and calls people out on it. Leitch is supposed to be one of our vet leaders and he cant make those kinds of mistakes.
Whats the status with the rules for adding players? Can we do it still or was there a deadline? Is it only players without contract now, or am I making that up?

The Bulls currently have a trialist in camp - Argentine defender Guillermo Imhoff. So free agents are always welcomed!
And I already started perusing the Maxim list - GOOOD LOOKS bro. Great stuff.
