Praise the Lord, It’s Angel!
By: Martha | April 13th, 2007
After a week or so of silence, the Juan Pablo Angel rumor has resurfaced in actual, legitimate form: According to Big Apple Soccer, Jeff Agoos was recently in Birmingham, finalizing the deal that, if it actually exists, will bring the striker to RBNY. Woo hoo! Rumors suggest Angel will sign a two-year deal, and that Villa are letting him go for a transfer fee of around $1 million. The transfer window is closing as we speak so, if this is happening, it damn well better be wrapped up soon.
Did I mention woo hoo? I’ve said before that I’m an Angel fan, and I’ve got a ton of belief in his ability to succeed in MLS. That said, if he comes it’ll be important to give him some time to settle in, because it tends to take Angel a while to find his proverbial scoring boots after he changes location. Knowing how frustrated he’s been of late at Villa, it’s easy to imagine that he’d put even more pressure on himself to produce than usual, which could lead to several weeks of exasperation for everyone. He will, however, eventually find his groove and when that happens? Look out, MLS. Look the hell out.
There is one issue here that I don’t understand: If RBNY succeed in signing Angel, it suggests the front office might actually know what they’re doing. But, given the past several years and their recent “Find a Brazilian! Any Brazilian!” approach to the transfer market, that’s awfully hard to believe. Is it possible they stumbled upon Angel by simple, blind luck? Because, honestly, I think I’d be more comfortable with that than the appeance of competence — the latter will require way too much adjustment to my perception of the club.
