Preseason Battles II: The Keepers
By: Dave Martinez | February 5th, 2009
SECURE STARTER:
None
CONTENDERS:
Jon Conway
Danny Cepero
Terry Boss
Caleb Patterson-Sewell
OVERVIEW:
Continuing our “Preseason Battles” analysis, this week we focus our spotlight on the back line. Goalkeeping has been a major plus for the Red Bulls these past few seasons, anchored by the great and unexpected work of Jon Conway, a career back up that has seemingly blossomed since being given the starters job.
Unfortunately for Conway, he and former Red Bulls defender Jeff Parke were given the dubious honor of being MLS first performance enhancing cheats (just to be clear, the accusations continue to maintain that this was an over the counter supplement).
This opened the door for a keeper who immediately stole the hearts and voices of the Red Bull supporters, Danny Cepero. Noticabely shorter, smaller and younger than Conway, Cepero makes up for his physical limits with a loud voice on the backline and an equally powerful ability to react, saving the Bulls down the playoff run all the way into the MLS Cup.
These two will be battling it out for the starters position. And considering the fact Conway’s real crime was being ignorant and not asking the consultation of the teams trainers before he devoured supplements, it would be interesting to see if this mind lapse, at such a significant part of the season, would result in Conway losing the starters job all together. After all, the age old adage in sports is that a starter will never lose his spot due to injury or circumstances beyond their control. How will Osorio treat the competition for the backline?
Right behind these two front runners are the back guys holding up the fort; Terry Boss and Caleb Patterson-Sewell. Terry Boss, best known for being the brother of the New York Giants own Kevin Boss, has been a standout keeper in USL2, leading Charlotte to the finals before coming to the Bulls. Caleb Patterson-Sewell is best know for his stellar performance in the second half of a friendly player last year against Barcelona. Jon Conway let in 4 goals, and Sewell started the second. It took Barca over a half hour to find the back of the net again, but to the point, Sewell was turning away shot after shot in a memorable performance.
Now, if I were to play the part of Nostradamus today, I would make the following predictions:
- Conway has the leg up on the starting duties since he never really lost them to begin with. But at the slightest sign of weakness, Cepero will be given his shot, and Conway may be used as trade bait in a league that is desperate for quality backline play.
- Sewell beats out Boss for that third keeper role. From the little we have seen of Caleb, and the usual praise we hear, it would be a shock to think Boss would beat the Aussi out. Caleb had his moment in the spotlight last season, stands at 6′3″, and is 7 years Bosses minor. Though Boss has that Giant Stadium connection, I think Patterson may have the inside track in this one.
- Now, both Cepero and Sewell were signed to developmental contracts last season. Clearly, with this years 4 developmental players per roster rule, only one of them could be afforded to be given this unenviable distinction. I would bet on Cepero being made senior, and Sewell continuing another season as the other kind of “DP.”
SENIOR SPOTS: 2 (6/24 in our analysis so far)
DEVELOPMENTAL: 1/4

BTW – Thank you to all of the readers that have stuck it out this offseason right here with me on TORB. Readership jumped about 20% in a month, so I can only assume many of you took a Bulls break during the winter doldrums. For the diehards, and the Johnny Come Latelys, thanks for the support. It is always appreciated.

Dave, Cepero is likely to start the first four games with Conway being suspended. After that first month, I believe Conway will have to win his starting job back.

Eugene once again with the save! lol You are absolutely right. What a brain fart on my part. But, if you take a step back, the question will still be whether or not Conway does get his job back. The suspension was considered so dubious when it happened that the question I provide above still holds water. Will Conway be given back his reigns to the backline? And if Cepero continues to shine, how will fans react if indeed he is relegated back to the bench?
Good call Eugene. You are my Editor in Chief.

lol, no problem Dave, thanks for all the hard work!
If Cepero is solid for the first month, and I expect him to be, I think it would be hard for the coach to justify putting in Conway just because Conway’s suspension is up. I think Conway is going to have to put in lots of hard work again and wait for Cepero to slip up — otherwise, why rock the boat, right?
Cepero needs to show consistency, which he relatively has so far, but he hasn’t been in that many games. It’s clear from his playoffs performance that he doesn’t get rattled under pressure. If Cepero shows consistency, it’ll be hard to justify keeping Conway’s $105k salary cap hit on the roster as opposed to trading him, hopefully for some defensive help.
In regards to height, guys like Nick Rimando and Troy Perkins have performed very well in goal despite not being the tallest goalkeepers. Rimando’s performance was exemplary last season and he had a very good backup in Chris Seitz nipping at his heels.
Personally, I think Conway should have already been traded, but the fact that he wasn’t probably implies doubt in Boss’ ability to be the back-up ‘keeper.

This would have been the offseason to make that keeper move. On the east, Toronto would have eaten RB toe fungus for Conway. On the west, Chivas and even Colorado, regardless of Burpo, would have probably shown interest. The question will come up again as the season moves along, and it will be interesting how Conway is treated come game 5.

If Cepero puts in some consistent performances, I can’t see Conway getting the job back. While he made the jump to first choice keeper better than it could have been expected, even at his best he was never exactly a source of inspiration, and as Cepero has greater potential, it might be unfair as he never lost his place due to quality, but I just don’t think he is worth hurting Cepero’s morale over.
Now if Cepero flops on the other hand..

I have to think that Conway will be allowed back his spot as soon as legally possible, for the good of the league, and also as a show of support for Conway’s circumstances in particular. It would be kind of a dickish move not to, don’t you think?
That said though, I know that Cepero has won many of our hearts and minds (my own included) and if he keeps the starting spot, it’s because he definitely earned it.

On the suspension: A few of the Minn. Vikings players were suspended under the same circumstances (over the counter, with the banned stuff not listed). They had their suspensions overturned/delayed through the courts. I wonder why that wouldnt hold true here as well????

You know Charlie, I think it’s way too late to make a big to do about this since they have already been complacent with the verdict. kind of hard to challenge it a year later.
btw – the Vikings need a real Quarterback. Hell, even if they had Favre, they would have made it much further along.

Nice writing, as always…although I could have done without the toejam, LOL!!! I first thought this was about a great guy…like “He’s a KEEPER”, which of course I can think of one!…but ummmm, you meant keeper, cute play on words. I hear Cepero is a pretty nice/ cool guy too…he sure won my heart that 1st game/ goal thingiemabop.

You know, had I changed the title to “The Goalies,” a bunch of soccer fanatics would have had my throat – “THATS FOR HOCKEY”

I think I check this site more because I’m board and can’t wait for the season to start already.

Speaking of the word goalie, I just had a debate on Red Bulls Reader about it lol.. Although it isn’t the BEST word to use, I still believe its ok to use it because when you say goalie, people know what you mean.. a goalie is a player that is charged with directly preventing the opposite team from scoring by defending the goal. It doesn’t matter what we call it because goalie, goalkeeper, netminder (not used often), and keeper all mean the same thing…. Danny Cepero!

Hey Dave, I’m curious.. is the ANY news about what we’re going to do with the second DP slot?

there* sorry for the typo

Second DP is being saved for next seasons RB Arena induction. Currently, there is a lot of cap room to mess with, so the plan is to bring in some quality players for this season, sign them for a year contract, retain the talent that works, and bring in the DP next season.

I guess that isn’t too bad of an idea.. Hopefully we will still be able to keep Angel for a few more years because he truly is a great forward and with another DP, we would be an unstoppable team..

It looks like that second DP slot might be used this year.. its a real longshot but it would be AMAZING if we can get Thierry Henry! It looks like a small possibility on Ives, but DEFINITELY a longshot.. What do you think about this Dave? How stoked would you be if we were able to get Henry on the Red Bulls?
