Preview: Crew v. RBNY Tonight

By: Dave Martinez | June 27th, 2009

What a difference a year makes.

That is the first thought that comes to mind in this rematch of the MLS Cup Final, as the Bulls travel out to Columbus to face the Crew. And wouldn’t you know it; the Crew will be given their championship rings in a pregame ceremony. How fitting.

Schelotto and his league leading 10 goals will be aiming their cannons at the Red Bulls early and often. Petke is still out for the game, so a combination of Goldthwaite and Mendes will be shouldering the defensive load for a team that has given up the most goals this season (27), tied only with San Jose.

The Bulls still have Kandji, Celades and Angel listed as questionable for the game, and with the season slipping through their fingertips, it is a wonder how they will make up for the losses in the offensive end. It is practically surgical the way the heart of the offense has been taken out here. This is a team that has only managed to score 14 times out of 17 games (a league low). To say the odds are against them is an understatement.

The team is currently dead last in the eastern division, tallying the most losses in the league (11), and tied for least wins (2) with Los Angeles. If there is any hope of a turnaround, they are going to have to do it while limping.
