Push The Panic Button: RBNY 1 – TFC 3
By: Dave Martinez | October 5th, 2008
When even the band-aids can’t hold back the gush of blood, you know your in trouble. Led by Gabriel Cichero, Jorge Rojas and Juan Pietravallo, the Red Bulls put up a mediocre effort that lead to an eventual and predictable finish.
Gabe Cichero commited another of his “one gaffe a game” plays, as an errant and ill advised back pass header to Conway fell well short, allowing the speedy and dangerous Chad Barrett to snag the ball and float it in nets.
With a physical effort being put through moving forward, the Bulls simply couldn’t produce fluidity in its attack. Not until Dave Van Den Bergh at least. The inclusion of Van Den Bergh in the second half resulted in a temporary jolt for the team, leading to a beautiful goal, slot right, for Dane Richards.
A “trick” set piece, held by Gabe Cichero and Jorge Rojas, ended with a Rojas left into the wall, which ricocheted to Marvell Wynne, who burnt the entire right side of the field to feed Barrett for the game winning goal. Cichero was nowhere to be found, still wondering how he was behind a set piece ball, way on the other side of the field.
Remember “Countdown to Extinction?” Well, after writing it, I felt I was a bit too negative. Unfortunately, I was right on point. And depending on the results of Chicago v. KC Sunday, this playoff push may take a different view – from the outside, in.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Marvell Wynne. The way he basically dusted the entire team, just in time to feed his team to a goal – wow. I would really like for all of you dolts that were around last year to show face and tell me again how Marvell was all speed and no skill . . . .
TURNING POINT OF THE MATCH
If there was one play that turned the game around, it was that Rojas free kick gone awry. But let me tell you – the trigger shy forwards, and the wasted opportunities didn’t help either.
WHAT THE *$!*!$_!**@& MOMENT OF THE MATCH
Gabe Cichero, once again, has a gaffe. He played well after this happened, for the most part. But his accident prone defense has been costing us far too much lately. Once again, I advocate the return of Jeff Parke at central defense in a 3-5-2. Let Cichero take a wing.
SPECIAL ED PLAYER OF THE GAME
Gabe Cichero.

I continue to believe that this team will never make it to the next level without two things
1}Defense of a high caliber. RIght now we panic in the defensive third almost everytime. When in doubt kick it out is not a professional level strategy. And gaffs are one thing but continued goal creating mistakes are beyond my ability to excuse.
2}Playmaking that actually involves making plays. We have probably the best striker in MLS and had another top 5 or so striker in Altidore. Magee, Richards and Kandji are very solid scoring threats. However, and not to put it all on Rojas, we are incapable of making plays for them. Our entire ability to score seems based on booting it forward for Richards to race to, getting lucky off garbage in the opposing third or complete one on one play by Angel.
I remain stunned to the point of despair that Angel is not involved in play unless he goes and gets it himself. I simply cant understand this at all. Hes hardworking as hell, tough as nails and skilled as MLS has but hes invisible most of the game. I can not believe this is a result of either his play or coaching.

I definitely have to agree – Dane Richards is the crutch of this team. When in doubt, look for Dane. Its one dimensional, predictable even.
And another thing – Angel really is starting to fade into the background when this teams offense isnt clicking. Dane gets more looks on the ball then Angel!
Things need to change. And Rojas needs to step up as well.

good news for RSL as it makes a wildcard spot that much closer(assuming we dont end up in the top 3 in the west)
