Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona . . . W Connection?
By: Dave Martinez | July 8th, 2009
One of the best parts about being a season ticket holder are the international games included in your package. And boy, has this area been spoiled to some great clashes in the past, including games against Bayern Munich and Barcelona. All inclusive baby!
This year features many great teams traveling the states, including Real Madrid facing DC United, Barcelona traveling the country, and AC Milan tapped to take on the Galaxy in a bout of highly ironic proportions.
This has bought the question to the mind of many Bulls fans – what about us? What international mega clash will fans be treated to this year? Will Real Madrid take a short 4 hour bus ride to play us once they get done with DC.
Not exactly.
I have it on good word that season ticket holders will be treated to a game that abounds in importance, and severely lacks in the sexy department. That opponent? W Connection, the first round competition in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Like I said – not sexy – but definitely important.
The positive side of this is that the Bulls are actually presented with a game that not only matters, but may give long suffering fans something to cheer about for the remainder of the season. Still in need of 30 points out of a possible 33 to even sniff the playoffs, the Champions League may be the only place the Red Bulls and the fan base can turn to find success.
The negative? Well . . . it is W Connection.
The preliminary rounds consist of home and home legs scheduled to be played July 28-30 and Aug. 4-6, with aggregate rules. Though this hasn’t been made official yet, I have received it on good word that this will be the international game for the season. Season ticket holders may use their Game A tickets to attend the game, as part of their package.
Let me know what you think. Is it sexy you desire or importance you crave?

Sexy or not they are a worthy challenge to this NYRB squad as the regining Caribeen Champions. I wouldn’t downplay this match as a negative. Besides who gives a crap about seeing a friendly when we have a legitimate competition (and the only relevant football of the remaining yeat) to play.

I’m with ya on that one Sack. More than worthy opponent and one of the last games of importance on schedule. Not exactly a gate buster but I will take a meaningful game over a meaningless friendly anytime …

Agreed, prob the last really important match of the season. And let’s not take them lightly, didn’t Joe Public from T&T smack around the Revs last season? Some life, pro footballer living in the Caribbean? Where do I sign up.

this could be the most boring news Ive ever heard
Barca, Madrid, Milan … these are the types of teams that should be coming to NY to help energize the fan base.
W connection? What the hell is that? An a-cappella group?
weakest shit ever
Metro Stars are starting to suck the life out of local football

I feel ripped off as a season ticket holder… I would have got tickets to the other teams game in dc.. I don’t know if we can even win this game.. I hope so!!

What the hell is so sexy about getting our asses handed to us by Barcelona. I’d rather watch the team play someone we have a possibility of beating. Add to that the fact that it’s a real international competition. This is what we should be focused on. Forget the playoffs. It’s not going to happen. This is the only competition that matters now.
