RECAP: RBNY 0 - CHIVAS 3
By: Dave Martinez | September 10th, 2007
. . . Maybe we can ask HER if she can play D for the mighty Red Bull . . .
Another week, and a heartbreaker to boot. We needed this game and we blew it.
Read on, comment below (though the trend seems to be “we as Metro fans hide after a loss”).
*sigh* Good grief . . . .
THE LINEUP
I had a problem with this game even BEFORE the starting whistle.
Check it out:
=========Angel=====Woly===========
===========Mathis=================
DVB========================Reyna
==========Vide==================
Goldthwaite==Parke==Stammler==Leitch
==========Waterreus===============
This was the formation.
4-1-2-1-2 formation is one of my personal favs. But look at these pieces!
I like Mathis behind the forwards, but I would have had Doe in for Woly (and you saw what Doe was doing when he subbed in!).
Reyna on a wing? he is 400 years old, and every one of those 400 years, he has spent as a defensive midfielder. So what happened? He played the wing like a defensive midfielder. I mean, how many more back passes can he make? And on the wing no less? Come now . . . .
Goldthwaite was back. Hooray.
And my fav . . . that Stammler / Parke combo. Why has Mendes been banished? The guy plays well and is being punished by our coach for playing his ass off all season?
Mendes/Parke > Stammler/Parke
But back to the point . . . .
Lets take the 4-1-2-1-2, and put some spice into it . . . for instance . . .
=======Angel========Doe=========
===========Mathis===============
=DVB=====================Magee=
============Reyna==============
=Dema===Mendes===Parke=====Leitch=
==============R.W.=============
Keep Reyna in his most comfortable position
Bring back Mendes / Parke in the center.
Put DVB and Kovalenko on the same side of the pitch, that way if DVB pinches, Kovi has his back and vice versa.
Put Magee on Richards wing so he can get some playing time and create.
I would have rather done something to that affect.
By games end, we had Kovalenko, Reyna, Vide all in at the same time. Thats 3 “supposed” defensive midfielders. Mathis, Goldthwaite and Woly were taken out.
Todays lineups left much to be desired.
GIVING UP THE EARLY GOAL
Talk about deflating - I go to the bathroom, and Galindo scores a beaut on us. And as far as I remember, we are horrendous after giving up that early goal, and thats history talking.
MATHIS INJURED
Magee came in for a hobbled Mathis. Lets really hope this isnt something too serious. They are calling it a leg contusion . . .
GALINDO
Wow. Pure and simple. And the way he burned Stammler (foul or not, World Class play). This kid should become a citizen and join the MNT. Now.
STAMMLER / PARKE - where is MENDES?!
LET ME PREFACE THIS BY SAYING STAMMLER IS AN ULTRA SWEET GUY . . . .

See?!?!?!
But, again, the starting centerbacks - Why has Mendes been banished?
Regardless. There is a thread I started over at Metrofanatic with the topic simply being - who is the better tandem? mendes parke or stammler parke.
Go give it a vote. Ide love to see who is with me.
Though Mendes is far from perfect, he plays well with Parke. And the forced injection of Stammler, in my eyes, has been producing at least one self inflicted error induced chance a game.
Again, how about this for a backline
=======Reyna========
Dema=Mendes=Parke=Freeman/Leitch.
Hey, we need the grit right? And Reyna solidifies our middle as well. I think it may be a winning formula.
As for Stammler - it isnt fair that he is Mr. All Purpose, but we can not force him into a lineup if it just doesnt work. We need em as our main utility guy. But I am sure he is looking for a starters spot at this point in his career. His future will be one I will watch with great interest, especially as this team continues its growth spurt.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
STAR OF THE GAME: Maykel Galindo. That kid was lightning, and what a nose for the ball! He put in the first nail of the coffin, and sealed it shut afterwards.
PLAY OF THE GAME: Galindo’s second goal. yes, it should have been a foul, but what a world class bump off and cover on Stammler. Little Galindo dropped Stammler like a toddler, played it off, juked the goalie, and found the back of the net. Insane Cubano! Insane!
SCAPEGOAT OF THE GAME: Bruce Arena. 24 games, 24 different lineups. The original lineup for this game. The lineup through out the game. The finished lineup. The changes made little sense. The strategy I didnt get. And Reyna at the wing? No way.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This team needs to do much more. We have a high powered Chicago right around the corner, along with a host of other quality teams.
Time to get our stuff together boys. Actually, its been time. For weeks.

I’m too emotionally defeated to make a worth-while comment.

Ive never been a big Arena fan but Ive supported him this season as he tries to bring some winning ways to NY football.
But last nights game -wooo!
man oh man it cant be said enough - DEFNESE!!!
where is it? i cant see a lick of it. ok, thats unfair since both parke and Waterreus do an ok job there. but man do they need help.
And sadly Ive lost all faith in both Reyna and Wolyniec. Perhaps Reyna needs to be paired differently to be effective. im not sure. it’d seem that Vide would allow Reyna to attack more but I sure dont see that.
And while Im willing to conceed that the game might have had a very different personality had Richards and Jozy been in the game, the lack of effectiveness in the midfield and on defense are shocking!
We need coco. Even Schopp might help.
And I agree 100% that F Doe looks like the answer to mix things up. Especially while we lack Jozy. That kid - Doe - really impresses me.

I regret not making more of a big deal on Doe, but the kid can play! We have to keep him in the mix. And if he can shoot a cross? Boom, we have a solution to the Angel problem . . . . Good Points layup

Dave - Great game. Your blog is great, a lot less biased than the rest of ours. What happened to Angel? Does he need Altidore or was it just a bad game for him?

Without Altidore, Angel does not have someone to serve him the ball and/or create a distraction to leave him enough space to score.
Put it this way. 2 forwards moving up towards the opposing goal facing 4 defenders. Those two forwards are Woly and Angel. Do you see Woly getting triple teamed? Doubtful.
Alti gives Angel room. Without another presence up top, Angel is handicapped.
And thanks for the kind words.

Hello just wanted to know if anyone knows how long Clint will be out. He was playing so well. Great coverage of the Redbulls. Really love your column. Goodbye Reyna hello Amado Guev. and Francis Doe over Woly any day. Not to say anything bad but WOly is always on the ground and cannot dribble around anyone he is useless. We can do better. Next year help for JPA at the forward since Jozy is rumored to be leaving. Lets look at Eski from Real Salt Lake he is a home town boy and dying to come to New York.
Take Care Guys and great job again.
